It Happened...P0628
 

Was on my way to Austin to take my wife to her doctors appointment today, was driving along, truck was running great and all of a sudden the gas pedal went dead. The truck shut off, I managed to get it to the side of the road and tried to restart it...It ran for about 2 seconds and died again. Checked the codes and had P0628 "Low Voltage Detected At Fuel Lift Pump".....not good. I take this to mean my lift pump is toast. Any other things I can check and eliminate before I have to go request a loan so I can get it fixed?

Cant help you much on a third gen. What kind of fuel pressure are you seeing? I do believe the CP3 should run without a lift pump, so this could be something else.

I dont have a fuel press gauge (I Know, I know......) Im kinda clueless about the fuel system on these things. I thought the lift pump and the CP3 were one in the same.

maybe someone will still have there stock LP and hook you up with it

I guess the next step could be getting pressure gauge and checking the fuel pressure. You dont need anything fancy - an air pressure gauge will work (1/8" npt), a 24" grease gun hose (1/8" npt as well), and whatever fitting you need (that I cant hel you with). There possibly is a test port on the CP-3 but Im guessing at this point.

GOOD NEWS. Well, kinda. The lift pump and the CP3 injection pump are not the same critter. The lift pump's job is only to supply fuel to the CP3. Unlike the 98.5 - 02 2nd gen's, the 3rd gen Dodges generally won't run when the lift pump craps out. Problem is the factory replacment lift pump installs in the fuel tank, even though yours may be in the back of the fuel filter housing and this adds to the labor cost if you have a shop do it.

At this piont most people just install an Air Dog or FASS pump to replace the stock lift pump. You can pick up the pumps themselves for like $200.00 or pumps/filter combos for $500.00-$600.00. Good luck.

Ok...So basically....Its not the $1000+ CP3, but the relatively cheaper lift pump? And an Air Dog or FASS bypass's the stock lift pump to provide fuel to the CP3? Do I have that correct?

Well...Figured out its the lift pump....got it running again, I beat on the pump with a wrench, primed the system and layed on the skinny pedal while I cranked it. Got it started and drove the dogshit out of it for about 8 miles with no problems....Looks like an Air Dog is in my future though.
