Fuel leak on 99 Dodge
Bombers,
Looking for a little help here.. This morning I stopped at gas station and left the truck running outside. When I came out about three minutes later there was about a four or five inch pool of diesel under the engine on the ground. When I popped the hood, I noticed that fuel looks to be seeping out of the grommet of the sensor located on top of the fuel filter housing. It wasn't too cold outside, only about 50 or so, and I haven't noticed this leak before. What sensor is located on the top of the fuel filter housing, and can I replace the grommet easily or do I have to replace the entire sensor?? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Nate 1999 Dodge 2500 |
Bump.
i might be waaay wrong, but maybe its a bad o-ring |
I will look at the one in the garage when I get home today for you and let you know what I find out.
|
Also, I changed the fuel filter about a thousand miles ago, and the o ring hadn't leaked at all, so I think that should be good.
Thanks for the help Nate |
I have this same problem
I have this same problem, what can be done to fix this?
It is definitely leaking at the grommet, not the o-ring. Thanks. |
Anybody have any ideas on this one? Is it the water in fuel sensor that's leaking?
|
It looks like it is leaking at the grommet, where the wires for the pre filter heater enter the enclosure.
The replacement fuel filter canister assembly runs over $1000 from the local Dodge dealer. I don't even have the heater plugged in, it shorted out several years ago and I never replaced it because of the cost. Is there some way to replace the whole filter canister and there by eliminate the leak? Any of your thoughts would be very much appreciated. |
FASS or Airdog but that is a little more expensive than what is needed, can the grommet be replaced?

I had the same thing on my 99 , I just got done installing a fass system and eliminated the factory filter and lift pump. I found a sale on the fass 95 at www.Scheiddiesel.com I got the system for $535, It took me half a day to install.

Well now I thought mine was leaking too, but found out the expensive way that it was the #5 injector line. LOL, finally found out when I broke down in Ogalalla, Nebraska and had to get towed in. NOT a cheap tow bill when you're pullin a trailer and grossin 20K

Thanks for your input! You guys rock!
I have looked extensively and cannot find anyone that sells the grommets, they only sell the entire canister assembly. Dr. Evil, the wires that run the prefilter heater enter the canister right smack on top of the assembly. I don't use the heater, I unplugged it years ago as it was causing a short in my electrical system. Jeepdude, for as much as I don't want to spend half a day farting around with this thing, it looks like your suggestion may be the best bet. I tried JB weld, but it just pops off when I fire up the truck. The dealer suggested silicon. I bet that would last long. |
What all's involved with that install? I mean I'm sure the majority of your time is spent droping the tank for the draw straw, but what else is there to it?
|
When you get the fass system there will be instructions, I mounted mine right next to the gas tank on the outer fram rail. I didn't have to drop the gas tank. It comes with everything you need exept cable ties to tie the hose and wiring into place.
|
I think I know where I can score some cable ties!
Thanks jeepdude! |
Do you have to replace the lift pump? That may be beyond my pay grade as a diesel mechanic.
