95 cummins

I got a 95 dodge cummins and the truck loses power from time to time and shakes really bad when it does, I replaced the lift pump last year and its been fine until a month or so ago, My local diesel mechanic said it could be my injection pump, The truck has over 200,000 miles on it and i dunno if its worth it , so i like some feedback thanks

worth it, if you dont want the truck anymore ill take it, or just the engine for that matter, junkyard with 180000 on them sells for $4000 around here, with no warranty

well the truck has been a money hog im the second owner i think the guy who owned it before me was hard on it

I knoiw its not a 24valve but what's the fuel pressure?
I had 2 lift pumps on a buddy truck die within 2 weeks! Both brand new!
Fiannly got a fass and no problems!

Just a thought! Also check for air leak/snugness on the suction side of the pump!

Also does it do it when the tank is below a certain level?

Somme problems with the draw straws cracking and sucking air when the level of fuel get @ or below the crack!

ever since ive had the truck it dont seem like it has the power it should,it wont even burn tires, but the motor is stock so,only tranny upgrades, but when the lift pump went bad when i got to a half tank it would just shut off on me and it was a killer to start,i would have to hold the throttle to the floor to get it to start then it would blow gray smoke everwhere, but i had that KILLER DOWEL PIN come out on me and broke the top of my timing case but i found a guy who welding it on the truck for me it wasnt that bad,but ever since then when i have noticed that the truck has had problems ,but i got to fix my injector pump anyway its leaking oil out of the pump where the delivery valves are

Heres a couple of tips that might help out:

Number 1) Killer Dowel Pin - did you just weld the cover/case? Did you replace the pin? If you didnt, you need to very soon. The pin keeps the timing case from moving around.

2) Youre idle sounds low if you have to put your foot on the gas when you start it. What is youre idle set at? it should be 800+ rpm with a the truck in gear and AC on (not sure why the AC has to be on though). If you have low idle bump it up - makes a big difference, if you dont know how - let us know. Its an easy thing to do.

3) Have you ever replaced the rubber fuel lines? There are two at the injector pump and two at the tank. Over time the develop very small holes that let air into the fuel lines causing the truck to lose prime. These holes are small enough to let air in but not let fuel out - so you have no idea taht there is a problem. Replacing these lines is a pain, so make sure you only use marine grade diesel hose. Regular fuel hose doesnt last very long and this isnt a job you want to do very often.

4) Have you bumped up youre timing? Over time, the timing that set at the factory tends to slip. I believe they did not torque the nut on the shaft enough. I would look into bumping up or at least checking the timing. Set it at 16 degrees or so - they truck will run better and might give you a little better mileage as well.

5) Have you been into youre pump? Have you slid youre plate (You will need a set of guages to do any of this). Have you slid youre AFC housing, tweaked the star wheel? Done any of that?

In stock form the 12Vs especially the early ones like yours are gutless. You have to tweak it a bit - maybe a fuel plate, governor spring kit and / or some injectors to get the performance you want. Have a look here for some ideas:

As already mentioned - it probably wouldnt hurt to check the fuel pressure as well. We can step you through that if you want to do that yourself.

the A/C compressor pulls the idle down when kicked on, setting the idle without the A/C on can cause the vehicle to stall when the compressor kicks on. especially on gas vehicles!

i dont know much about diesels but it runs now alright it just hicups from time to time but there is no good diesel mechanic in my area i got to travel hundreds of miles away

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Well, if its not running that good - jump in get youre hands dirty and do something about it. Do the stuff I listed above and it will run much better.

You did not answer my question - when you lost the KDP - did you get one from Cummins and put it back in??

dodgeman129 11-06-2008 07:00 PM

well no i didnt put one back in at the time myself and everyone i talked to had no idea what is was for or why it did what it did i had no internet at the time and i just recently found out what it was
