Batteries Keep Dying
 

2003 cummins SO. 47 RE

If my truck sits for 10 hours or more it wont start. Had the batteries checked, they are good. Alternator is good. Started a couple weeks ago. Cleaned all the cables. Cleaned them really good. During the same time my tranny started acting up. Turned out to be a bad governer and one more electronic thing in there. Tranny shop fixed it. Checked for codes and i got a P 2509 and a P 0700. Wiring is stock on truck, no accessories or aftermarket stuff wired directly to the batteries or anything.

Dont wanna fry any more electronic parts or hurt my batteries.

In my case I changed out the batteries that checked out just fine and the battery cables and it fixed my problem like this. Come to find out that if your running the dual terminal batteries, that is posts both on the side and top that they are known to cause problems shorting out. As for the cables, if there is any broken wires in there they can short the batteries out and drain them.

Another guy on here found out his problem was the seat belt switch was shorting his out. If you do a search for seat belt it should turn that one up.

In the end you have short someplace there. Also try disconnecting the negative terminal on both batteries next time you shut it down and see if they still drain. If they do then the batteries are bad and the hot weather is killin them and if they don't it's a short someplace.

Well, the batteries tested good at NAPA, but they used this little cheap hand held tester. Went to AutoZone and they have a much more high end tester on a cart. One of them tested bad, so i replaced it. Started good this morning. Ill see how it does this afternoon. Hopefully thats all it was.

If that left over battery is very old it will pull the new battery down to it's level. So unless it is a new battery itself they always recommend changing both batteries out at the same time. Them Auto Zone Gold's are some of the best rated batteries on the market.

didnt know that. i just bought it because thats where i was at. dont usually go to autozone, im a napa guy. the other one is not new, at least two years old

Thanks. Yeah, i bought the '03 back in '05, but it was my wifes rig. We split up and i let her have it, was happy with my '93. But long story short, still in my name and not makin payments, i had to save it from bein repo'd. Then had to sell my '93:argh:

I had an issue on my '96 where the intake heater relays were shorted internally and staying on ALL THE TIME. Battery drain was just one issue this caused. Might wanna check them out.

Well, looks as if the battery solved the problem. Still dont understand how two different testers at napa said the battery was good and the one at autozone showed it being bad. Either way, she sat for about 12 hours overnight and started like a champ this morning. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, hope i got it fixed

Since it appears to be fixed now we'll close it out. Wyoranch, you can open it back up again anytime you want if there is more to add to it.
