Ate 2 Starters In My 83 GMC /6.2
Just got this 1983 GMC with a 6.2 , and was wonder if the dual battery system requires a stronger starter ? Of course, the exhaust is run right on top of the stater, so thinking about headers/dual exhaust also...
|
GM was really thinking, weren't they? That's one of the two things those starters hate, that is heat. Either from the exhaust, or real long crank times. The other thing they hate is being fed low current. If you haven't done so already, load test each battery, clean/inspect all cable connections. Then have your electrical, I mean the charging system tested.
Oh yeah, welcome to Diesel Bombers! |
did you get the batteries charged? when you say ate starters do you mean burnt up or the sprag gear got damaged?

Hey Guys
i went and bought 2 new batteries, and will replace the starter tomorrow... solenoid is cooked. Cables able to be okay, and i don't think i over crank it.
Haven't tested the load when i turn her over. . i heard of 24 volt starters for this, and was wondering with it being a dual battery would be a /? longer lasting one? Thanks much |
I dont understand what you are asking. Are you buying starters that are for 6.2 GM diesel? If so, something else is likely wrong. You dont need a 24V starter your truck is wired in parallel. If it was in series, then yes it would be 24V.
How long are you cranking? Are you sure you dont have a fuel problem and are just overcranking? |
It would last a lot longer!. But your entire electrical system will be 24v, which won't be good at all. I know a guy that rigged up a 24v system just for the starter. He ended up using a gas starter on a diesel engine. I'll have to ask him how he rigged it up.

Hey Guys... latest update.. okay, i exchanged starter, and paid 40 bucks for a heat shield to go around it.. no, i don't think i over crank it, but haven't check it the voltage drop with the new one yet.. new batteries, new starter, 40 buck heat shield... its either fix it, or have her towed ... Thanks much

So it's still doing it?
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Could also be the engine itself is going. See how hard it is to turn over by hand. |
