Hi I'm new to the forum, and also new to owning a 2nd Gen cummins. I bought a 2001 2500 this past July from Las Vegas and had it shipped to FL it had less than 83k on it. The truck is absolutely mint and I'm very happy with my purchase as I looked for over a year for it and I'm new to diesels in general but am very mechanically inclined. I have a Jeep wranger TJ with the straight 6 and never had a problem with it which is why I chose the 2nd gen cummins as it is a straight 6 as well.

Anyway here is my issue I just rolled over 85k in the truck and was going through doing oil change, fuel filter, cleaning the air filter, checking fluids etc as the dealership said they had done all this prior to delivery I wanted to go through it again after a couple thousand miles to make sure I got a good truck with no mechanical issues, this is my problem I changed the oil and filter and used a Purolator 1 filter and rotella 15w-40 in it. I have no idea what the dealership used in it as my emails and calls have gone unanswered after purchase (surprise, surprise) I'm noticing that from the forward driver side front of the motor it seems to be smoking slightly now and didn't used to smoke at all. As a new diesel owner I'm learning this truck as I go but what is causing the smoke and am I in danger of damaging anything while driving it? I have the jeep to use as a back up but its not anywhere near as fun to drive. Anyone with help or ideas what to look at would be a huge help to me?! Thanks

 

 

I have found it and I believe it is the crankcase vent bottle? or as some people on google I've found call it the "puke bottle" is where the smoke is coming from I found it after I shut the truck off one day coming home from work I opened the hood and the fan was blowing smoke everywhere so I shut off the truck and was able to see that little canister with a hole in it smoking away and it was covered in oily gunk as well as the whole area around it. So now that I know what it is what are some good recommended fixes for that, I've read some posts of people saying eventually it could clog the radiator and that would obviously be bad. Some say clean it out and replace it some say make it a longer hose and move it. Which is better long term and more cost effective? Or am I way off with either of those ideas?

So I haven't had the chance to clean out the bottle yet I had planned on doing it last I heard from you over the weekend but it rained all weekend and then I had a charter to go on but now it doesn't smoke anymore at all like it used to and there is zero sign of smoke where there was a couple weeks ago. Is it possible that when I did an oil change and filled the motor back up with 3 gallons that that was too much oil? I looked and googled several places prior to the oil change and even the manual said 11 quarts but 12 with filter which is the same as 3 gallons. So now do I just delete the bottle and run a longer hose now that it appears I have no blow by or just keep it in place and clean the radiator and fan and the other dozen or so areas that oily sludge got slung from the fan?
