2001 dodge 24v starts up then shuts off

Im in help of help here I have a 2001 dodge ram 3500 with a cummins and 5spd I have gauges I have a raptor lift pump and have good fuel pressure 20psi at idle. I start my truck and it might idle for 5 second or 5 mins then it's like someone shuts the key off. If I raise the idle to 1500 it seems like it's missing and won't actually stall. And sometimes it starts and runs fine no issues. I don't want to spend the money on unwanted repairs if I don't have to and I'm leaning toward my vp44 taking a dump but I'd really like to make sure since they are expensive please any info to help me diagnose this thanks.

Forgot to put the only codes I'm getting are for my fuel level sender is broken

Doesn't sound like the VP. maybe water in the fuel or contaminated? check connections at the PCM and check battery voltages. check for loose grounds too.
Are you filtering through the stock filter? or aftermarket?

Dslmech600 07-17-2015 01:49 PM

I'm filtering through a stock filter and went over all groumds I could find would a bad battery be possible culprit and where is the ecm

Jet A Fuel 07-18-2015 04:49 AM

The Engine control module is on the left side of the engine block. The powertrain control module is on the right hand rear of the engine compartment.

Check your filter bowl,
The ECM/PCM are not tripping a code so the sensors would appear to be functioning correctly. Check your Fuel relay and ASD relay in the power distribution center ( left side fender) the Fuel relay also energizes the VP pump module. wiggle check connections, swap relays etc.

interesting thing about the fuel level deal here is a picture of mine.

all i can say is keep your tank topped off to prevent this.

Hi thanks for the info I will try that today. And what are u showing me /saying about my fuel level sender. Every now and then my fuel gauge will work but not be accurate. I have been driving with it broke for about 6 months watching my mileage.would the senser not working have anything to do with my problem?:humm:

Jet A Fuel 07-18-2015 06:56 AM

The fuel pump module (in tank) gets worn in the sliders and sticks. Giving erroneous readings and not alowing the FP to sit in fuel at low fuel situations 1/4 tank etc.

Also the potentiometer (on the fuel level sender) gets to the point where there isn't enough spring left in the brush to contact the commutator of the potentiometer.
You can change the whole thing as an assembly or take it apart and delicately re-spring the brushes to make better contact.
I don't think that is the problem with the truck not running right but its 99% of the time the problem with the fuel level sender.

One other note to disassemble the sender you will need to thread the shaft that the float lever rides on and put a nut on it 4-40 standard thread works great.
see pic above.

Gotcha :jump: thanks

Don't know if this is the problem but found the wires coming from the vp44 (around the one that's tapped) the covering from the wire is gone for all the wires like they got hot and it's just deteriorate away I just siliconed the whole area lol to see if that helps

Jet A Fuel 07-18-2015 10:35 AM

3 Attachment(s)
Man that is a good find, if the wires got that hot at the module there are probably issues.
Here are 3 schematics of the wiring the last page shows the VP connection.

Attachment 30341

Attachment 30342

Attachment 30343

Usually one wire will appear burnt but all of them makes me wonder if the pump didn't get really hot.

Dslmech600 07-18-2015 10:55 AM

Why would the get that hot? What could cause this my engine temp never gets above 190 unless its 90 outside it might hit 205ish lol stupid dodge dash gives u three numbers

Jet A Fuel 07-18-2015 12:08 PM

did the lift pump ever fail on the truck and the pump run dry?

Dslmech600 07-18-2015 01:58 PM

Yea when I bought it about a year and a half ago the guy didn't have any gauges on it and when I finally got them hooked up it has 4 psi so I replaced the lift pump but I drove it about 2 months before replacement and God knows how long he drove it like that

Jet A Fuel 07-26-2015 12:34 PM

Any Updates?

Dslmech600 07-26-2015 12:58 PM

Honestly I I've been on vacation I haven't worked on it for a bit but the came back and the batteries were dead I had 6 volts for both haha charged them for a few days fired ot up and it sputtered twice then ran fine at a idle for around an hour then I shut it off 5 to 10 times and it ran fine and fired back up fine so I drove it about 10 miles didnt miss a beat. I don't know if it was coincidence or if the problem still lies somewhere but on Monday I'm going to get 2 new batteries anyway to try it first and I will let u know

Dslmech600 07-31-2015 08:32 PM

Update I've put 2 new batteries and all new cable ends on because they wouldn't tighten and I've drove it for 2 days now no problems knock on wood maybe on Sunday I'll hook my edge back up and try that then

Dslmech600 08-01-2015 09:41 AM

Update hauled a load of logs today and made it home and truck shut off went to start it cranked like it didn't have fuel (just filled tank last night and fuel pressure gauge during cranking was 16psi) then it would start and shut off start and shut off and start then shut off then cranked for like almost a min then do the same start shut off start then shut off. Finally got a engine code of p1689 no communication between ecm and injection pump. Any ideas?:humm::dang:

I would look at those burnt wires on the injection pump module. And prepare to buy a pump. That's probably not what you want to hear but the module isn't serviceable without replacing the pump.

Dslmech600 08-02-2015 05:23 AM

Yea i was planning on it just want to make sure that's it is all. U know with problems like this there's always that feeling like if I put this pump in and then it sputters on me again lol then what haha

Jet A Fuel 08-02-2015 08:25 AM

I think that it is a possibility with the wiring damaged it could have damaged the ECM. Definitely need to fix those wires at the plug for the VP module with some heat shrink or something, check all the pins in that plug for deterioration from heat. Best thing would be to re-pin that plug. or replace the harness.

Dslmech600 08-02-2015 09:25 AM

Yea but it's not the plug wires it's the wires coming off the injection pump cpu there is only 4 I think. U really can't get in there to do anything with them without taking the pump off
