97 Chevy Diesel
Hello,
I have a 97 Chevy diesel 6.5 turbo that is blowing black smoke and loss of power. I had the injector pump replaced and still no power and the same amount of black smoke. VIN 1GCGK29F9VE198261 I have put over 2500 to get this problem fixed and still no go as my machanic has no idea what is wrong. I did find a vacuum line from the turbo that was leaking and replaced it and still no power and still blowing black smoke. Any help please as I am on my own here with no diesel machanic within 2 hrs of me |
Turbo has been checked and lines?
Yes turbo was checked and good so i was told, lines good as well
Waste gate selenoid can cause power loss and smoke. That would be next on my list.
Also air filter could be clogged
Egr solenoid or egr could have failed. I think they had egr that year . Hope some other guys step in with some more info.
Ok Itied the waste gate shut to test drive and no better. Have a new waste gate sylnoid coming will replace it. Installed a new air filter, will check egr solenoid.
How can I test my turbo |
shaft play movement side to side in an out of the fins.
do you have any leaks of oil? or oil being burnt
are you meaning around the turbo for the oil leaks?
No there is no oil leaks there but I do have oil leaks which are normal for 197678 miles I would think. So how do I check for play in the fins, take front off turbo and see if there is play that way |
as far as oil bring burnt have no idea I dont see any gray smoke just black coming out of exaust
Yea you just want to move the shaft see if there's alot of play. As far as oil leak just around turbo and lines check.

Ok I talked with my mechanic that installed the injector pump. He said the original pump was loose and one bolt was out of it. Said he can not get it into time it is around 12 deg. and he said should be able to get it around 3 deg.
So I checked codes this morning and this is what I got P0216- injector timing control circuit P0236- turbocharger sensor A circuit P1214- injector pump timing offset so my question is could the injector timing control circuit bad and cause these problems thanks |
How many miles on truck? Timing chain could have stretched wich would cause timing issues. The coolent sensor advances time for cold start and if it goes bad can be out of time if its thinking its cold out. Timing it is kinda the same as gas engine just have to move the pump like it was a distributor.
I would not replace circuit I would look at timing forsure wich causes those codes and lift pump. Could have a bad in tank fuel line. How is it running now that he got the timing adjusted a little better?
Fuel filter ever been changed recently?
