Backpressure

Pulled the exhaust backpressure sensor and tube.Cleared out about 2" of blockage.Put back together and drove it.Massive amount of black smoke-never smoked like that before-also had no power.Got on it a little bit and there was a loud pop-not sure what it was but it still ran.It shut down again after a little while.Code said EBV malfunction.Had to clear the codes about 6 times before it would start again.Do I need to pull the turbo check out the valve? Can I clean it or should I replace it?This was the only code that came up so maybe its close to being fixed.

Pulled turbo

Pulled the turbo last night. That was not fun.The exhaust back pressure valve moves very easily - there isn't any buildup on anything that I see.Should I replace the actuator? What else can I do to check for possible problems while I have the turbo off?
I really need to get this thing fixed- it's getting to the point of not caring about it and just getting rid of it.I have a 1989 f350 that was a 7.3 and the problems I had with that made me put a 460 in it.I will not pull this thing apart to this point again. Please help me regain my trust in a diesel.Thanks.

is the actuator vacume controled if so check to see that it hold vacume if not then i would replace it..i would also check the vacume pump to make sure it still provides vacume if not then replace it..that i think would hold open the valve...scott:humm:

don't want to lead you down a bad road, but I fixed an 01 or 02 7.3 that was stalling at highway speeds, would start back up, just intermittent stall.
Turned out there was an terminal that was doubled over on the GEM (general electric module) under steering wheel, behind fuse block. The terminal that was doubled over was power to pcm. It would contact enough to run, but with vibrations at highway speed it would cut out. Was an easy fix. Just hard to get the module out, 3 big electrical bulkheads held in place w 10mm bolts.
My two cents.
