01 Cummins rough idle blowing white smoke
2001 Cummins, 288,000 miles well maintained
Drove to work everything was fine, fired it up to go get lunch and it had a very rough idle an did not want to rev, when attempted to rev white smoke sputtered out of the exhaust and it sounded as if it was missing. No check engine lights, so I replaced the fuel filter. A few weeks ago my aftermarket lift pump failed so I pulled it off an ran a straight hose an still had the same issue even with new filter and taking out the lift pump. I rebuilt the lift pump and put it back in and im having the same issue, I did get a air intake heater code a few weeks ago but it hasn't been on since. At idle it seems fine, revs a little better after new filter but can still feel the chugging/roughness in the rev/idle. Not sure whats going on, any help?? |
Check your turbo, it may have locked up and may be choking the engine on both ends ..

white smoke = timing and fuel
faulty or damaged injectors low cylinder compression (ring wear or galzed cylinder) water can also cause white smoke cracked head or head gasket. |
on an 01 probably gonna be something like injectors, Timing I could see but that would require a tuner or something ..
Poor fuel pressure, bad lift pump .... Have someone cycle key, put your ear on tank, if you dont hear anything .. problem found .. |
