7.3l oil reservoir leak

So here goes! Just did a dye test to find a leak and come to find out I have oil coming out the oil reservoir (part 6658) hrough the stud hole for 1820602-c1. It is the hole, not the stud. I switched studs and it still comes out the same hole.. The stud is one of the two mounting studs for the engine guard. Its in the back, on the drivers side. Any thoughts on how to handle this? Can I add some sealant into the hole, to stop the bleeding? Or do I need to replace the whole reservoir ($150-200)? Or could it be something deeper? I wonder if its cracked maybe. I just disassembled the fuel bowl and oil pump and they looked good, didn't see a problem with the reservoir top part, but who knows? Shoulda done the dye test first I guess.

Ah, and of course the vitals. 7.3l 2002 F350. About 125k. Nice truck, but it had a tough winter and I've been chasing gremlins lately.

Have you tried a new gasket?

willieandsamsdad 05-06-2014 06:36 AM

Yes, brand new gasket between the removeable top part of the reservoir and the unremoveable bottom part (gear housing) was installed over the weekend. The leak is from up top, where the stud nut seats above the hole, not along the gasket line.

Huh never heard of that happening before. My guess is that you need a new reservoir. You can find a used one for pretty cheap, you don't need to buy a brand new one.

The reservoir appears to be a discontinued interrnational part (#1831022C97). International refers me to Ford. Ford tells me like 20 different things and prices - all of which put me a week out.
