2004 F250 6.0L No start problem(s)
 

Hey guys, So i finally put away the mustang and bought myself my first diesel. I went with a pretty 2004 F250 6.0L. I know 6.0's have a bad rep but this one was super pretty and the guy had all the receipts for bullet proofing the engine. The only thing I have really done is buy the SCT flash tuner, (which is awesome by the way). All my other changes have been for looks, and the rims and tires.

My problem started when I was going to work and noticed a red fluid under my truck. It was automatic transmission fluid. I was in a hurry to get to work and noticed my power steering wasn't all there, it made since that my power steering was obviously leaking somewhere in one of the lines. I added a little more fluid for the time being till I could get it narrowed to the leak and fixed. I work at as a CO at a jail and work 16 hours almost everyday so finding the spare time isn't easy.

On a recent trip to the city after driving awhile I shut my truck off and pumped gas. When I tried to start her back up she was just cranking and cranking and wouldn't turn over. That is the first time that has ever happened. I let her cool down for a while and with a little gas I was able to get her started back up. This became a reoccurring issue maybe 4-5 times that she wouldnt turn back over when she was hot. I ran my codes and got a P2290 Injector Control Pressure Too Low... so im assuming that i blew an O ring or SCT fitting? I went to crank her over this morning and it made a horrible grinding noise and wouldn't crank.. If i turn the key it makes one little clunk noise and just whines like a belt spinning... no crank what so ever.... I'm so confused how this just all the sudden happened. I dont know if its the starter or the flywheel or what......:humm:

Im not sure if the power steering has to do with any of the other issues but I didnt want to leave any details out as I am in major distress to getting her back on the road.. I dont know to much about diesels yet but im slowly learning.. im used to working on the mustang.

2004 Ford F250 Super Duty 6.0L
SCT Flash Tuned
Bulletproofed - EGR, Headstuds,etc..
6" inch Lift
35" tires..

I just went through the same situation. My truck would start fine, cold. Once warm I had a no start condition.

My issue ended up being a clogged screen at the IPR. This in turn damaged the HPOP. I am dropping a new HPOP in the truck. The pump comes with a new IPR valve, so all problems are (in theory) corrected. Follow this with a total oil change and it should be good to go.

There are a few tests that can be done to narrow down exactly what is occurring. Some one with more experience than I can walk you through them.

Sorry, missed the second part.

Sounds to me like the start gave up, after all the cranking to get the truck started when it's hot - no start.

As I said, hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

Thanks for the reply Nitelord. I figured it was the HPOP.. Is there a good way to diagnose if i need to replace the whole pump or is it repairable? If I remember correctly a whole HPOP can be about $800?

Do you plan on replacing the HPOP yourself or having someone do it?

I found a HPOP manufactured for $465.00 with a $305.00 core return.. has anyone had any experience with this replacement or have a good walk through?

I picked one up for $599. with a core of $75. (@injector warehouse). It includes a new regulator valve, upgrade to the quick connects and the new seals for installation. It is being installed at a local speed shop.

There are ways to test the pump and the regulator, but I'm not a mechanic. I am relying on my guy at the shop. The tests he ran, I found mentioned on the net, but I don't know how to describe any of it to you. :s:

I replaced my starter yesterday due to it being toast from all the cranking. It was the stock starter at 165K so I went ahead and replaced it. I can get it to start but the truck was cold so the no hot start problem is still here..

The test youre talking about is the air compressed tests in the pump I'm assuming? I know not all people with this no hot start problem has been the oil pump... some have said crankshaft sensor fixed it and others said SCT fittings and O rings were blown....

I need to get on the ball and narrow my issue down.:argh:

My buddy that works for a ford dealership is going to come check out my problem.. He said it sounds like a blown fitting (SCT or O ring) in the HPOP.. He said he would like to check the FICM and IPR first.. Ill keep you updated.

So.... :argh:

After putting the new starter on, my batteries were completely dead.. I did a rapid 30 min charge on each this morning and put them back in... I cranked for a minute and then my truck fired back up... turned it off and started it again... let it idle for about 10 mins and drove it around real easy.. the only things I did was the new starter, oil change, oil filter, and fuel filter change... my codes have disappeared.. :s::s::s::s:

That would be great if the problem is fixed. I'd have your buddy check FICM and IPR anyway. If there is a leak, it may not cause the issues you were seeing until it gets hot.
