TRUCK WONT START!!!

my truck wont start. my step dad just used it to go to work and back and when he got back her turned the truck off and walked away. and i went and tried to start the truck and got nothing. i get the lights on the dash and radio and such. i get my glow plugs saying they are warming up and everything acts normal. then i turn the key all the way and i get nothing except the i think its the temperature gague, goes way to the right (not sure if thats normal)
and i hear a noise but its not the engine turning over its more like a humm? but not as consistent. need help soon! looked at old posts and tried checking the points on all the batteries and the starter was put on two weeks ago so that should be fine
any suggestions help thanks:argh::argh::argh::argh::argh::argh::argh::a rgh::argh:

Make sure starter wires are tight.

theiceman2713 06-04-2013 06:20 PM

just checked the starter wires. they are all real tight. tried banging on the starter. still nothing
and the humm sounds like a really fast er er er er er er er

bobfbigman 06-04-2013 06:20 PM

What kind of truck is it??

theiceman2713 06-04-2013 06:24 PM

94 chevy 1500 4x4 with the 6.5L turbo diesel automatic tranny

bobfbigman 06-04-2013 06:29 PM

does it almost WHINE? it sounds like the bendix isn't pushing out on the starter,

theiceman2713 06-04-2013 06:31 PM

its not really a wine its almost like a slightly lower version of a kid running a stick along a fence quickly

Try jumping the starter with a screwdriver and see if it does any thing different.

theiceman2713 06-04-2013 06:42 PM

how do i jump it with a screw driver?

bobfbigman 06-04-2013 06:42 PM

check the batteries, sounds like it isn't producing enough amps to crank the starter and you hear the solenoid chattering, could be either the batteries are tired or the alternator is failing.

theiceman2713 06-04-2013 06:44 PM

that wouldnt surprise me. the guy that i bought it from said they might need to be replaced soon. are they just normal batteries? like could i swap one out from a car? sorry im new to diesels still learning

bobfbigman 06-04-2013 06:45 PM

between the positive post on starter to the little post with the copper tab going into starter, if I am thinking right, it will spark so it might scare ya, watch our head

Mase 06-04-2013 06:46 PM

With key on touch the big and little terminal on the starter at the same time.Make sure you have your digits and loose clothing clear of moving parts!

bobfbigman 06-04-2013 06:47 PM

A;ways better to replace both batteries at same time, bad things can happen, the old bat will kill a new bat if only one is replaced

Mase 06-04-2013 06:49 PM

750cca or larger.

bobfbigman 06-04-2013 06:52 PM

or a pair of 8Ds:w2: just kiddin, yes at least 750cca

theiceman2713 06-05-2013 01:59 PM

is there a way without a voltometer that i can tell if my batteries are dead? the gauge on the dash is saying just under 14, like around 13 amps.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i want to try and jump the truck to see if the batteries are really the issue. but im not sure with the whole double battery thing how to jump them. and i fi can use my honda

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

im charging the drivers side battery tonight and im going to try and start it in the morning
just a 2 amp floating charge. ill leave it for 2 hours like that then im going to up it to a 15 amp charge for 30 minutes or so and then im going to put the battery back in the truck and try and turn it over and see what happens

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

fully charged both batteries and still nothing. just an annoying noise as if my truck was laughing at me :/

just jumped it with a wrench and the starter turned over. ill admit it was on accident a bolt looked loose and i impulsively decided to tighten it, got the shock of my life when it sparked and the starter started turning over the engine. so all that is working but im getting nothing when i turn the key. any ideas what it could be? maybe im an idiot and theres a switch somewhere? or a bad solenoid?:argh::ouch::humm::nope::td::scare2::scar e2::bat::s::s::s::s::argh::argh:

Is the shifter all the way up in park ? It could be the neutral safety switch :c:

theiceman2713 06-06-2013 12:46 PM

yeah i thought that might have something to do with that so i tried pushing the lever all the way up and tried it while holding it there and got the same result. i tried moving the lever down to neutral and then back to park and got nothing again. is there another way to find out if thats what it is?

figured it out. it was a tiny 10 cent connector that connected the ignition wire to the starter solenoid. but i pulled the starter to find this out, thinking it was the solenoid. ended up breaking a bolt in the process so what was a 10 cent repair turned much more costly. atleast in time. thanks everyone for your help

Glad to here you got it going.
