weird turbo sound?

Hey guys im new to the site I have a 2003 dodge diesel and when I put it to the floor or while pulling I hear a sound coming from exhaust or turbo maybe it sounds like a vaccum cleaner almost (not the normai turbo whistle) ive checked for boost leaks I found a few and fixed them and still no change still hear the vaccum cleaner sound seems a bit doggy to me as well also checked turbo shaft play it is good one guy I talked to said it could be the waste gate but im stumped right now and need so help thanks in advance, mitch

also when im driving normally in lower gears seems to have the normal turbo whistle I more so hear the vaccum cleaner sound when putting it down or pulling so I assum its when its boosting it s kinda hard to explain

Anybody ?

Have you checked your intercooler tanks? Exhaust manifold gaskets?

mitchk_1981 06-03-2013 04:18 PM

Ive checked intercooler, boots, pipe for leaks all good had a quick look of exhaust manifold doesnt apper to be any obvious leaks are you thinking its a boost leak or......

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I was also wonderimg if it could be a map sensor issue or something along those lines

MillerBoyzDiesel 06-04-2013 09:11 AM

Thinking it could be manifold gaskets. The manifolds can crack too. Is it like a screeching sound?

mitchk_1981 06-04-2013 09:52 PM

no it sounds more like a vaccum seems to be more so coming out my exhaust I was towing camper this weeked all seemed ok then today on the way back I heard the vaccum cleaner type sound and truck seemed to be unpowered pulling the trailer im kinda wondering if my waste gate is sticking open or if I have a bad map sensor or something seems to be intermintent im not much of a diesel mechanic so im kinda stumped here

MillerBoyzDiesel 06-05-2013 08:40 AM

Could it be the engine fan youre hearing? They can be noticeably loud when the clutch kicks in.

Bigg Redd 06-05-2013 09:42 AM

X2. Mine gets loud when I pull my travel trailer. Its also intermitent, especially when going up grades.
Have you noticed a rise in EGTs (higher than normal)? Increase in black smoke? (also thinking WG issue):humm:

mitchk_1981 06-05-2013 10:22 AM

no its not the fan I am aware of the sound of the engine fan this like I said sounds more like a vaccum cleaner out my exhaust and seems to be underpowered when it happens I don't notice any smoke out exhaust just the strange sound and a lack of power is there a way to check or test the waste gate?

MillerBoyzDiesel 06-05-2013 10:26 AM

You can actuate the rod by hand or use compressed air to the actuator. You can also unhook the actuator rod from the gate and work the gate by hand to see if it sticks.

mitchk_1981 06-05-2013 08:10 PM

well I checked the wastegate and I am able to move it with a good pull on the shaft(I assum from pretension) doesn't seem to be binding and other ideas maybe I missed a boost leak on the small hose from turbo to actuator ? I dunno im just throwing ideas out there does anyone know how truck would act with a bad mass airflow sensor?

mitchk_1981 06-08-2013 05:11 PM

hey guys anymore input on this issue any help would be great like I said earlier I hear the weird vaccum cleaner sound from exhaust seems to be underpowered when it happens I don't notice any smoke waste gate moves by hand ,no codes relating to a boost issue, didn't notice any big boost leaks when I checked turbo shaft play ok could it be a sensor of some sort or should I see codes with that

Bigg Redd 06-09-2013 12:45 PM

Other than checking the boots for leaks (tightening hose clamps), maybe for a rupture in one of the boots, as in "popped" or rupture in an area where it cant be seen. Possibly something rubbed/ rubbing on a boot causing a/ the possibe rupture. Also a possible boost leak, from compromised gasket, at the plenum cover (what your heater grid and intake elbow is bolted to). Turbo gasket leak :humm: Clogged Catalytic converter (if equipped), or somehow failed/ collapsed mufller, bent or damaged exhaust pipe causing excessive back pressure. :humm: im running out of ideas...........
just tossing them out there.
