5.9 24 v 1998 Ram without fuel
 
This Ram quit.I had it towed and while checking out why the datalink was disabled I pulled the fuel filter to get to the ECM 50 pin socket for tests. While the tests yield electrical problems the engine is not getting any fuel to the filter.Tomorrow I will crack the inlet side to transfer pump and see if I have any fuel being pumped from tank. Any Idea how to check pump relay. If I have to pull the tank pump out of truck is it easier from top or bottom?
If transfer pump has to go should I use stock pump or upgrade? Can't wait to get the beast back on the road also needs set of shocks and a few other issues straightened out.

You can just use a jumper wire on the Relay. As for the in tank fuel pump there is not any. The transfer pump needs to run at least 12 PSI at idle and Ive seen them go out and run the engine out of fuel. If the Transfer pump is dead if you have the money go and upgrade but I wont recommend one because it depends on your budget and what you realy want to have. Replacing the stock one is easy and takes 15 minutes then its on to purging your fuel system.

I assumed both models used a tank pump # 4897668AD . All Data the info service I subscribe to showed these parts is it the 12 valve model that used a tank pump? I notice in the online manual for my vehicle they show a transfer pump I do not have.One with a primer button. I can see the month my truck was built is going to be important! As for upgrading I do not mind investing the money for reliability or improving mpg. Thanks for the help.If all that is stopping this beast today is the transfer pump I might be able to get it done today If the rain stops.Just not that ambitious working in the rain.

Yes the 12 valve uses a mechanical Lift pump rather than an electrical one like the 24 valve . So yes its important you get the correct year but the transfer pumps are the same till 01' and 02'. As for working in the rain I will trade you. Ive been working in sub zero temps and im tired of frezzing my hands lol! but I do hope thats all your proablems.

I ordered an Alliant Pump to replace the original although the original seemed to operate when I put 12 volts directly to it. I checked the voltage at the pump cable when the key was switched on it only went to 9.6 volts and then dropped to 7.6 I checked the relay nc and no paths they checked well I got a resistance of 70 ohm across the resistance legs but do not know the normal value. something is sucking out 25 % of the voltage I need for the pump to operate ?

I am convinced there is a wiring problem between the SCI receive and SerialCommunication Interface transmit. Finding it is a problem.

also depends the transfer pumps can operate but not work completely, but when it comes to electrical im lost lol.

I have finally been able to get codes out of the 98 Ram.I ran another another ground off the back of the number 5 DLC pin and was able to scan the truck.It came up with a handful of codes not unexpected as I have been unplugging a lot of connections and testing.
Codes are 0234, 0237 1689 1693 and 1698. After I replace the fuel pump with the new one I ordered and expect delivered Monday I will be able to try and start it and clear some codes.
I can't think of a better Christmas gift to myself than getting this running well ! Merry Christmas everyone.

Merry Christmas To you, When you replace the lift pump I generally just crack 1,3,4 injectors and bump it untill you have clean fuel and then close them off as the pump is running then start the truck. I hope its not sub zero where you are because it would make for a miserable day to mess with diesel.
