Newbie 6.5L Diesel Owner

Hello. My name is Mike. I live in IL. I am a Wyoming Tech Graduate and have worked on anything mechanical all my life. Most all of my experience/training deals with gasoline engines. I understand the basics of diesel but consider my self very wet behind the ears. The need for a full size truck to tow and push a plow has led me towards owning a diesel. The combination of MPG and Power is unbeatable in this time and age. Gas prices are even with diesel by me and gas is suppose to go higher. So I went out and found myself a diesel truck.

It is a 98 Chevy 2500 6.5L extended cab (no rust). I know, I know....run away while I can. That's all I hear about the 6.5L. Well the guy I am buying the truck from has thoroughly gone through it to make it very reliable and durable.

The block is a Peninsular block with 50,000 miles on it. The turbo is off a Cummings diesel sucking from a custom made cold air intake. It has a 4" thick intercooler, a 3.5" down pipe into 4" exhaust. It has the dual flow thermostat system with a mammoth radiator and a high flow water pump. The 4L80e trans has 20,000 miles on it. 1 ton LSD rear end.Hubs, front steering components and brakes have been replaced.

I will stop there. Overall it is a very affordable option and I am going to try it out. I am very excited but I am sure my neighbors will hate me :scare2:. I live in an apartment and park in the alley between complexes. I also plow snow for residential homes. I may have to start a thread or do a search on how to make it quieter on the outside. Most of the noise, at idle or low rpm's, comes from the engine bay and not the exhaust. I have been looking into sound deadeners for the engine bay and possibly throw a high flow cat and muffler to quiet the exhaust. Please let me know what you think. I have been reading threads and now I have officially joined. Nice to be here.
