New Guy in Alaska!

Hows everybody doin? Name is Owen and I am in the Army stationed up in Alaska and just bought my dream truck. It's a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab Short Bed. Unfortunalty, it is a Auto, I really wanted a manual but couldn't pass up the truck or the deal. Truck came with 18" Helo Maxx 8 rims with BuschWacker Fender Flares which really set the truck off with Open Country A/T tires. Now it's time for some engine mods and here's what im thinking and deffinetly open to advice. Debating between a K&N, S&B or AFE intake just not sure which one, trying to find out which one has a louder turbo whistle. My biggest dilemma right now is the exhaust. Living in Alaska we see -60+ degree temps so that plays a factor in the exhaust. I've heard that a 5" exhaust is to big and doesn't allow enough backpressure and you lose alot of your bottom end torque. Also, in extreme cold temps the engine takes alot longer to warm-up due to the movement of air. Can I go with the 5" cause I love the sound or would it make more sense to just buy a 4" turbo back and have a free flowing muffler. Any advice would be helpful!

:hi: First off you do NOT need or want back pressure with a diesel(this is not a gas motor). With a 4" exhaust it reduces 98% of back pressure, so a 5" is mostly for sound. Is your truck a late 05 or early? The late 05 has fixed most of the problems with the auto. I advise looking into a TC though. Checkout 5.9 Liter CR Dodge Cummins 03-07 - Diesel Bombers for more info. My Airaid gives great turbo sound and it is cheap and easy to install.

Jet A WOW small world. I am a Flight Engineer with the Chinook Unit up here and I wouldn't trade the job for anything. Cadillac of the ARMY!!!

Kuntry Yeah Man it's deffinetly nice up here. Was a pretty smokey summer thought which kinda sucked but there was hardly any rain most of the summer. Lots of days in the 80's which was awesome.

Truck is an early 05. And by early I mean it rolled of the line 12/04 so yeah... Not 100% sure what the difference is between the early and late models so any help decoding that would helpfull. Also, Thanks for the exhaust advice, pretty much sold on the 5" Expandit exhaust for Luke. Be calling him here in a couple weeks so Luke if you read this you just sold another! So far learned alot and this is by far the best diesel forum! You GUYS and GALS are the POOP!

with the intake go with a dry filter so you dont have to worry about oiling it...just blow or vacuum it out

Stay away from AFE. Had 2 of their systems, and they were both junk. Airaid is way better.
