newly aquired 94 ram looking for realiabilty and more

i am a 30 something and i just got a 94 ram 5sp reg cab 2wd cummins with 260k on the odometer.i got it for a fair price.it was a junkyard dog but the frame is cancer free and the body has just a few minor dents and dings.i have replaced some the of the electrical connections on the truck.mostly battery terminals.all the guages work. The blower motor and heat seem to work too.I have orderd gaskets and what i think i will need in doing the KDP mod.
i am wondering what kind of gasket sealant you all would recommend to do the mod and any sites that would help out a first time cummins/ram owner.i also see a coolant leak around the thermostat housing?i got two gaskets, one for the thermostat and one for the housing, they both are round.the housing looks like it has sealant around it.what would you all recommend for sealent for the housing?this engine looks to be in good shape but i am going to tear off the gear cover soon and hope for the best.not my first diesel but my first L6 diesel!

Congrats on the find and your in the right place for great info. The Copper RTV silicone seals great and withstands high heat, but makes it near impossible to pull apart later.:argh: Regular or heavy duty RTV silicone works fine. Your better off using gaskets if possible. Most of the mating surfaces on these trucks are desighned for gaskets.

Good luck with it and have fun.

If you need to use silicone, blue or orange around the t-stat or anywhere there's water, and black where there's oil.

BTW, welcome to DB!! :howdy:

thanks for the replys.
i want to get this truck running as it should before i attempt any mods.
i think i got the right gaskets for the thermostat and housing.i got them from the dealership.they are both round.i would have thought the gasket for the housing would be square.there is a greyish goop around the housing now,i would bet the previous owner used
some sort of sealant there before.CAN I get a better gasket for the thermostat housing?
and what does this copper gasket sealant look like?

thanks
