Hi all just got my first diesel been after one for a long time been working on gas trucks my whole life bought a fixer up diesel truck its a 1683 ford with the 6.9 this is a whole new beast than i'm use to working on and since I'm new to diesel power I find information is sometimes the hardest thing to get. Like for instance my glow plugs are not woking for some reason but I dont know why you have to work your butt off to get it to start but I dont have a clue where to start looking my wait to start light dosent even come on, I would like to get this fixed I've had gas hotrods all my life that i've built but this diesel power is the coolest thing i've ever had i'm a diesel power man 4life now

:howdy: What you can try is hook a momentary switch up to the glow plug relay. This will bypass the controller and manually close the relay. Just be careful that you don't hold it for more than 8 sec. Otherwise you'll burn up your glow plugs.

I've triec bypassing the controller and I get the wait to start light wait 8 sec. and it still wont crank without a shot of eaither so I'm not sure if the glow plugs work and dont know how to check them

Battery charger, like a little 10 amper. You can either remove all the glow plugs or test them on the engine. Be easier to pull them all and then test them. Clamp the ground on the wrench hex and touch the positive on the terminal. If it sparks a lot, it's good. No spark, it's shot, and if it's in between it's getting weak.

Now when you install new ones, keep an eye on the wait to start light or you can even listen for the relay to kick out. If it the relay doesn't kick out, turn the key back off or unplug the relay. Otherwise you'll end up burning out a set of glow plugs. I've seen relays stick, so be careful.
