new to diesel,

i am the new owner of a 2004 ford f250 4 door 4x4,- 6.o powerstroke..looking for info & advise to get better fuel economy, and maybe a lil more power..and so far have talked to 2 kinds of owners, 1 that has 200.000 mi & done nothing to the truck, and loves it..- another that says he,s afraid to drive his truck, because every time the check engine light comes on it costs $1500 to fix.! and how everything about this truck is over the top expensive.! myself, I worked as a mechanic,on police cars.-out of high school, and into hot rods..before I worked as a machinist for the last 30+ years.and do all my own work,-since I cant seem to find ANYONE. that can just do a job right. the first time. so I. end up doing it myself anyways.:s::humm:

ya. I end up havin to go back & fix what they miss,& dont have a lot of money to throw away,& wonder if the job got done correctly, - I work as a machinist. I got the f250 for $16.000 @ 4% rate with 115 k mi.& needed a full size for some time,my 99 ranger has over 310.000 mi & runs great.! - I went thru the motor at 240 k mi.& did the front end,& clutch, but its a step side, extended cab 4x4 & doesn't haul much.. I hope the f250 is near as good a truck as the ranger has been,Id just like to get better mileage, and stay legal

What does staying legal have to do with anything?

azhdrider50 08-05-2013 06:31 PM

staying legal.? well 1. the e.p.a. has us in a trick bag situation.. they have not enforced many of the new laws.. yet but, enforcement is at their discretion.. so the law applies to who THEY. want it to..like a few I know, who have been hit with outrageous fines for riding trick harleys, that do not exactly comply with emissions, after they passed. 2. if you do ever go to sell a vehicle, the value is ruined, if. you have chopped up, or removed any. emissions equipment.. in fact. it is illegal. to sell a vehicle. if. you have altered it..and you. can. be held responsible.. that is why. I. keep doing all. the trick stuff,on my older rides. that do not have to comply..:rocking:

I was semi kidding, in Hi they don't crack down like CA but they could as well I'm sure. I plan to keep the stock exhaust when I do get a turbo back in the event I need it for a safety check but EPA is almost non-exsistant here. So I was meaning it as a joke mostly. Programmer and ur pretty set from what I've been learning... My buddy told me a good programmer and injectors will make a good bit of difference. Said exhaust is big enough and intake flows decent as well? So they can basically be left stock anyway?

ya. I been hearing soo. many different opinions, ranging from, just go to hacking off the exhaust.& delete the e.g.r., to be careful not. to go over stage 2 on boost, because the head bolts will. give & blow head gaskets,- requiring the cab to be pulled..to do major motor work..being that I just got this truck, and want to learn how to make it last as long as I am on the hook. to keep paying for it.. my last truck - I still own & use. as a daily driver. that I ordered built the way I needed it.is a 99 ranger ext cab 4x4. after paying it off.- $26.000 over 4 years runs great. at 310.000 mi:tu:
