How do the 2500HDs hold up?
Looking to change trucks...going to trade the Dodge on something a little newer, and with a quad/extended/crew cab. I'm really interested in a newer (probably 2008 to current) 4wd GMC/Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0L/auto (stepping away from the diesel scene for the moment).
How do the 2500HDs tend to hold up? What quirks do they have? Do they hold up well for a highway-driven minivan/hauler, with some minor towing in the 10k range? What kind of mileage do they tend to get? |
I love the new style GM trucks! I havent heard too many issues with them. The 6.0L wont be bad for towing but you will def miss the power of the diesel. With a plow it might sit kinda low in the front but not terrible.

6.0 is pretty solid motor.. should get at least mid teens for mpg unloaded, but throw 10k behind it and expect single digit mpg's
|
Yup. My buddy has 340K on a stock 1999 6.0L. They are damn near bullet proof. As Budgreen said mid to upper teens is more than doable with a few mods and a light right foot!

the newer ones also have pretty good pep 360hp/380tq, should be more than enough grunt to pull 10k:hellox:

2500HD Happy!
I just hit 150k and have not had ANY maintenance issues. I have driven the piss out of this rig up and down the 'ice road' / haul road 7 times for hunting. Pulled trailers most of it's life. Everything from car haulers to 5 cords of wood. It is a beast. Really HAPPY! :tu:

Thanks for all the input.
We are definitely looking at a GM...the Ford doesn't do anything for me, and I'm not impressed with the Hemi or steering in the Dodge. Hopefully in the not to far future I will have time to track one down! Maybe even take one for a drive... |
The GM's have a few front end problems, not terrible though. Wheel bearings, and tie rods seem to be the main issues that we deal with a lot
|
Although I wasn't interested in buying it, we took an 06 for a test drive...nice truck. That dealer just took a 09 LT in with 31k, asking $31k...sounds high, maybe not.
We have done a little more research, and it looks like we may be able to grab a new 2012 for not much more $$ than a low mile late model...so that opened some options. |
