1990 chevy k1500 knocking noise

I have a 1990 chevy k1500. Its got a knocking noise but its not coming from the engine. It sounds like the tranny. The noise gets worse when you put it in gear. It starts and drives just fine it shifts perfectly and idles just fine. Any sugesstions on what it could be.
