rear axle strenght?

how strong is the new 14 bolts compared to the dana 70 or 80 in the dodges?

I'm looking for an alternative axle with disk brakes for my first gen.

what is the width of this axle also?

Never had a problem out of one. I have 60 work trucks here that get abused more in one day than most 'normal' trucks will see in a lifetime. They are over weight in the rear 24/7 and sometimes pulling overloaded trailers too, still without failure.

What measurement do you want? rotor to rotor, end to end, spring perch to spring perch, or other?

wms to wms
are they still 10.5 inch ring gear? will the old 14bolt detroit work in them?
how well does the E brake work?
any other weaknesses

Rttoys 01-19-2010 02:13 PM

68.25" wms to wms
10.5 ring gear and don't know if the old 14 bolt is the same.
E brake works very well, only the 1/2 ton trucks with the rear disc/drum system had problems, the 3/4-1 ton are fine.

Only weakness, but not really a weakness, is the G80 locker is sometime finnicky. If you get stuck in mud and goose it, it may not lock, but if you slow it down and let it lock up, then you are fine.

Those rear ends are one thing I just never really have to worry about on my fleet trucks.....ever. :c:

You have to push the little lever down. It's located on the left side of the foot well. :lol88:

Seriously, I've never had problems with them, just on 1/2 tons. :humm:

isnt the Ring gear 11.5? I think thats what mine is....:humm:

K50 01-19-2010 05:17 PM

Yours isn't a 14 bolt GM, you have the AAM 11.5" dude....Duramax/Big blocks use that axle, the 14 bolt is only used now on trucks with the 6.0L gas engine...

bobs83dodge 01-19-2010 09:27 PM

WELL, Britewhiteram and K50 have started a new topic here. when did they change to this 11.5 AAM?

what is the avalibility for limited slips and lockers? other parts?

I'm sorry for the ignorance but I have been a way from chevys for a long time.
