Info on the Dmax by generation

2001-2004 The 8th digit of the VIN is 1 and have the LB7 motor with 300hp and 520ftlbs to the crank, the 5 speed Allison auto tranny, or the 6 speed manual tranny. Stock they dyno ~ 240rwhp and 450rwtq. The LB7 has an air intake grid heater, IHI water cooled turbo, 17.5:1 compression ratio, and an injection pressure of 23,000 psi. I don’t think any of the 01s had any emission stuff, but some of the 02-04 have them. The way to tell is if you have the YF5 RPO code then you do have a Cat and/or EGR and if you have the NC1 you don’t. The Dmax comes with the 11.5” AAM in the rear with optional (G80) locker and the GM 9.5” IFS differentials. There were VERY few head gasket problems with the early 01s, which should have all been taken care of by now. More common problems were with injectors which GM has warranted up to 200K. It seems there have been less problems with the 04s. There were some body and minor interior changes in 03.

2004.5-2005 The 8th digit of the VIN is 2 has the LLY motor. With 310hp and 590ftlbs for the 04s and 310hp and605tq for the 05s to the crank except for manuals which was detuned to 300/520. Stock they dyno ~ 255rwhp and 490rwtq. The LLY has upgraded heads, water cooled Garrett Variable Vain Turbo, and the air intake grid heater was removed. The LLY is equipped to meet 2007 emissions with an egr, catalytic converter, and programming. There are no injector problems, but heavy hauling (<10K) in warm/hot temps has caused some overheating problems. There is aftermarket fixes available, but GM continues to play it off.

2006-2007 The LBZ motor with the 8th digit of the VIN being D has 360hp and 650ftlbs to the crank, but the early 06s kept the LLY VIN # of 2 and was detuned to the LLY hp/tq. Again the manuals where detuned to the LB7 hp/tq, but only a hand full where made before they where discontinued. The LBZ stock will dyno ~ 310rwhp and 530rwtq. The 06+ has a new Bosch 32-bit ECM, upgrades to the block rods and pistons, a 6th gear add to the Allison and upgrades to the valves, redesigned turbo vanes and compressor housing, redesigned 7 hole injectors, lowered compression ratio to 16.8:1, upgraded CP3 with an injection pressure of 26,000psi, better glow plugs, better cooling fan and other upgrades to the cooling system, new cold air intake, and air intake grid heater was reinstalled. This gen of Dmax seems to be problem free. Some still get hot during heavy towing, but none seem to be overheating.

2007.5-??? The 8th digit of the VIN is 6 has the LMM motor, and has a new body style. The power has been upped to 365 hp and 660tq to the crank. The LMM will “only” run on Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD). It has more emissions equipment like a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and new programming for emissions.

Nice I was wondering the LMM code. Thanks

Just to add to your numbers for the LMM, I saw a brand new one with around 400 miles on it dyno at 297 HP don't remember the torque though. And he did this consistently 100% stock.

Good write up.
