Loosing Dex Cool

It's no secret DC has been blamed for just about cooling system related failure on a GM vehicle. Some people will tell you it's all a wives tale, some will tell you it was only the early forms of DC and some say it's evil voo-doo and should be removed from our trucks ASAP.

So has anyone switched out their Dex for the green stuff?

If so did you do it for a particular reason or due to any hard proof?

green stuff? how about yellow

Yeah the old standard green coolant.

Who's got the yellow? Isn't that Ford?

I never saw Dex Cool as the cause for any failures when I worked at the dealer. I have cars with both kinds and none are better or worse about cooling system problems. Most problems I saw were from lack of maintenance/ flushing. Does Dex Cool last longer...I wouldn't know. I would never let a car go 100k without flushing. I flush mine about every year or 2. It's cheap insurance. Especially when you live in hell (Houston).

HOWEVER, if you are going to swap, be very careful and do it at your own risk. If you mix the red and green coolant, you will eventually end up with a black tar like substance that will get in every place your coolant is. This will wreak havoc and be very $$$ to fix. I had the pleasure of doing a few. If you do the swap, fulsh everything extremely well. When you think you have got every last bit out, do it all over again for good measure. Then, change every single hose. Flush it all again. Now you can refill with the other kind of coolant.

I don't plan on letting mine go to 100K or plan on switching. I think switching it out to the old stuff is more trouble than it's worth.

I do think GM's boasting about 100K coolant service life is a bunch of BS.
