Killing Cats

So I've been putting some serious thought into gutting my cat instead of replacing the pipe. I figure it will at least have the appearance of having one and keep the dealer off my back. Performance wise it's a win/win.

Have any of you actually done this?

What were your results?

I know I'll have to do something with the EGR but what else?

I guess the other question is:

Do I have a cat or a resonator? How do I know for sure other than looking up the pipe?

You have a cat I don't think the Dmax ever came with a resonator on the exhaust. I've never heard anything bad about the cat just being gutted, but I would think it would add some turbulence. Some guys have added a 4" straight pipe cut the cat off the stocker enlarged the holes to 4" and weld over the straight pipe. And there is also the fact that some say the cat is the bigger restriction and some say it’s the muffler not the cat...

It's a cat.

It seems like more work to gut the kitty, then to just replace the pipe, but to each his own. This may set off the CEL, and a 'Finger Stick' will cure the codes..........all except the P0299 underboost code that *some* '05 get. Maybe your's is a lucky one that won't throw that code.

If I'm not one of the lucky ones will a boost stick take care of underboost issues?

Hey Johnny.. I dunno about with the DMAX.. I dont think it would adversly effect the performance to gut the kitty.. Ive dont it several times before on gas burners in the past when we still had emissions in Oklahoma..

On that note, you could just move to Oklahoma and cut the cat out and not worry about emissions all together.. lol

:U:

Reckon a PPE Programmer will block those underboost codes too?

PPE and EFI Live are the only ways (kind of) to take care of the underboost code:U:
