new to diesel , new to forum.

Hi folks , im new to duramax and i got a message today for low oil, checked it and ended up adding 1.5 qt , oil was changed 6 mo. Ago . My question is . Is that normal to lose that much oil between changes.

first off :welcome:

i would so no, that is not normal. dealer will likely say it is within spec but most duramaxs use very little if any between changes. i dont have to add any between oil changes on mine.

is your duramax stock? how many miles on it. get us up to speed on your rig

thanks Jason

Thank you,
My duramax 6.6 is in a 2011 silverado ltz dually. I have 14,500 mi
On it just bought it 3mo ago , going to have the oil changed today, at the dealership, who has already said some loss is normal, also found out the oil was changed 7 mo. Ago .i do a very short drive to work also ,2 miles, the dealership wants me back in 1000 mi to start monitering oil loss. Can let you know more later today
And thank you for your input mich appreciated.

The short trips may be the reason for the oil consumption. These diesels like to get up to temp and worked hard.

When cold the rings, pistons, and cylinders are not fully sealed and burn more oil. Using it for short trips often will exaggerate the problem. If possible take it out every so often, get it up to temp and work it good. Long trips on the highway and towing are healthy for these engines And keeps them happy.

If you are doing all if this then i would make the dealership take care of it and not let them tell you it is normal.

1/2 to maybe 1 quart would be the most i would allow between the 10k mile oil change interval. 1.5 quarts in less miles is too much

Good luck, Jason
