Easy stuff first: air filter and fuel filter. those are normally the 2 most common cuplrits. If you are tinkering under the hood, pull the MAF sensor and clean it with spray carb cleaner. Make sure it completely dries before you put it back in. Don't need a run away ;)

I have just changed all filters and upgraded the air filter to a L&M where is the MAF sensor located?

Just past the air filter, on top of the intake duct. 2 screws hold it in. Take it out, clean it with spray carb cleaner, let it dry and put it back in.

There have been some problems with EGRs sticking a little and causing problems. Are you seeing excessive black smoke from the tail pipe?

no more than I've seen before not like my 98 6.5 turbo that smokes most of the time, but my 06 maybe I should look into the EGR valve?

does the maf give the code off for mass air volume

EGR's have been known to go bad on the LBZ, but usually set a code. On the same hand, I've seen strainger things happen.

It's suppose to, BUT as with all other computer controled devices, sometimes it doesn't.

How long has it been like this? should have set codes if there was a problem... Did you get some bad fuel? Maybe it clogged the filter a bit an just not enough to thro on the change filter light... with a stock tune it takes a lot to set a code...So what is it doin down shifting , boggin?

A friend of mine just bought an 06 Classic. He had some power issues and it was blowing a lot of black smoke. Another 06 owner suggested he remove the cat, muffler and run a straight pipe. He did and problem went away. They believe the cat was clogged. :jump:

Switched to Wrangler Dura Trac on my 06 LBZ, kept the same size tire as stock just more tread. I seem to have dropped from 17 mpg to 12. Not sure if the two are related, gonna clean MAF and switch from K&N to a paper filter. Can anyone tell me where the fuel filter is? Just got the truck, its my first Duramax, just want to try some easy things before I go to the dealer...

BriteWhiteRam 12-13-2010 01:34 PM

fuel filter is against the firewall on the passenger side near the top of the engine bay, tucked under the fuel filter head and intake tubing, remove the tubing and it is much easier to see and get at, you need to be careful with the plastic Water In Fuel sensor on the bottom, and you need to disconnect the wire before removal of the filter, some guys find it easier to do by removing the passenger side wheel well, i can do it from the top, your choice

Good choice on switching from the K&N back to the stock filter, much better filtration and should be able to last 60-80k miles before you need to change it, ive even heard up to 100k miles.. depending on driving conditions:hellox:

tire change shouldnt have affected mileage, NEVER trust the DIC, its inacurate, always calculate mileage by hand

towerhand 12-16-2010 04:03 PM

went to AC Delco paper filter, cleaned MAF, switched fuel filter, water in fuel sensor was broken replaced it too. Got up to 14 MPG on my 600 mile road trip tuesday ( hand calc.). the 17 mpg was hand calc. too... Any other Ideas?

BriteWhiteRam 12-16-2010 04:57 PM

have you blocked the EGR yet? if not the intake could be nice and full of a tar like soot and oil residue, its very common on these trucks, when i pulled the intake apart to do the head gaskets on mine the tubing, intake manifolds were full of that junk, could be blocking off your intake flow causing a loss of power

Edit: Mine never got good mileage until i tuned it, it was 13-17mpg and its now 18-22mpg, all hand calculated :c:

Rttoys 12-16-2010 06:12 PM

I hear of people in the cold states, the stations switch to a winter blend?? Maybe that would explain the sudden drop?

Have you pulled anything lately? A friend of mine's LBZ, every time he pulls his trailer, it takes a few tanks to get his unloaded milage back to normal.

towerhand 12-16-2010 08:25 PM

Have one waiting on me when I get back down to MO, gonna start there and then get wider exhaust, hopefully by summer I'll be all tricked out...
