mpg on the 07 4x4?

I'm looking to buy a 07 4x4 duramax. This is the early version and I believe it has the LBZ motor. I have a dodge right now with 19mpg. I'm just wondering if I can get the same better or worse.

Thanks

Oilfield_Mafia 07-20-2009 03:43 AM

With my listed mods.. if Im not pulling my camper, I average 18.9 mpg.. and I have a very VERY heavy right foot.. thats all 90+mph interstate mpg readings.:U:

GDief 07-20-2009 09:58 AM

Do most of them get in the range of 18 to 20 mpg. Would that be safe to say. I'm only asking because I was looking at one at the dealer and it showed 13.2. I assume that is just test ride mpg. Does the computer have the function of resetting for mpg.

Is the Duramax a better truck than Dodge or Ford?

insane3639 07-20-2009 04:47 PM

the question between which is a better truck is a huge debate but what it all boils down to is what do you plan on using your truck for? Do you want to tow a lot of weight, just go 4 wheeling with it, or just a nice daily driver?

Chevy's offer IFS (independent front suspension) which is a very smooth ride ok for modest 4 wheeling nothing to hardcore, but with a few upgrades to it you will be good to go. Also the stock turbo is good to 500 hp. Plus the other thing they have is the ability to be tuned by software called EFI Live which is the ultimate tuning software.

Fords are a whole different story if your going to get one buy one with a 7.3 in it because the 6.0 motor is good but very problematic

The Dodge has many offerings like solid axle and the legendary cummins which is like the Chevy 350 of the diesel world because there is a huge aftermarket for that motor. From what ive seen between the dodge and chevy in stock form the dodge gets slightly better mpg. But like oilfield said great mpg is very achievable.

Hope this helps

bobcat67 07-20-2009 04:52 PM

I know a guy who gets 12mpg no matter what he does in his duramax, and i know some that get 20+ it depends on how you use it and what not, the new duramax's have the 6 speed allison auto so that should help achieve better mileage, but the best mileage i've seen on any diesel is a VP44 injected 24v cummins with the 6 speed manual, i believe it' s most generally the NV5600 transmission, so if you're after mileage that's what i'd get

2500HeavyDuty 07-20-2009 09:37 PM

if hes getting 12mpg theres somethign wrong with the truck

ltr450 07-20-2009 11:20 PM

best i have seen was on 05 cummins with six and the edge box he was getting 25mpg. that was going easy on it

GDief 07-20-2009 11:56 PM

So what is the Duramax supposed to get on mpg? I have a dodge right now but am thinking about selling it for a Duramax. I have not heard that the duramax gets decent mileage. What is up with the 12mpg. I just drove a truck that got 13.4 or that is what is showing. Is there a reset on it? How long do you have to drive it in order for it to change? :argh:

2500HeavyDuty 07-21-2009 05:29 PM

ive averaged 10mpg a tank before, my foot was pretty heavy :w2:

Edge33 07-21-2009 05:42 PM

I just bought an 07 Chev with the LBZ and love it! It gets the same MPG as my 03 CTD 6 spd did and is way more comfortable. The dodge was chipped, exhaust, intake and clutch while the duramax has only an exhaust right now so the MPG will improve after a few mods. Stay away from the 05 Duramax though, the LLY runs hotter and gets shitty gas mileage. Definitly recommend either the LB7 or LBZ motors. The 6speed Allison rocks too my left leg is thanking me. Just my .02. :c:

mikes454 07-21-2009 06:26 PM

i get 12mpg consistantly driving hard everywhere with edge on level 4, see sig for list of mods. up here in canada thats 20L per 100km.(thats what the dash says anyways)

you do have 37's and a 6 inch lift. it does kill mpg. but the dash isnt 100% accurate

GDief 07-21-2009 11:06 PM

Hey Edge33, you never said what your mileage is, just that it gets the same as the old Dodge. I'm looking for numbers over here....

Can anyone tell me how tires size changes the mileage? Obviously 37 + really knock the mpg down. How about with 285 tires? What is the difference between the 265 to the 285. Any difference in mpg?

--Sorry bout that, well last tank was 15 mpg but that was around town and I couldnt keep my foot out of it, new truck :choochoo:, also the dash said i was 16-17 MPG so it was off a little. Im turning 35's so anything smaller and the MPG should improve a bit. Haven't done any highway trips yet, only had the truck about a week, but I'll let ya know or Im sure someone will chime in.

Tanc Crusher 07-22-2009 12:00 PM

Lets put it this way. Some get 18mpg and others may get 13mpg. Both be the same cab bed setup. use same fuel, be driven side side, roll off the assembly line right behind the other, and everything else the same. One will get better mileage than the other.

Now one starts adding programmers and one may do better on 40HP tune and the other may do better than the other on a 90HP tune. They can be exactly alike and differ so much. Never have figured out why.

If wanting 19mpg then better test drive it like an hour the way you plan to drive and see how it does. If it sucks bad then try a different truck.

Well said Tanc Crusher. I finally got a real answer. I was beginning to wonder if I was on the wrong sight? I don't understand why one truck will gets better or worse mileage then the other? I know that tires make a difference but what else? This truck has slightly bigger wheels and tires @ 285 70r 17 or 33" tires. On a run up and down hills for 20 miles or more it got an average 15.7 mpg. Mind you part of the trip it was as high as 21.

I did the same trip, same mph on my 3500 dodge with stock 265 70r 17 and got 18.3 overall.

My question is, does the larger tire account for 1 mile, 2 mile or ? on mpg. If I put the same tires on the dodge will I loose a mile or two. If so it will be close, then I'd buy the Duramax.

Thanks for your help in advance

HeavyChevyDMAX 08-08-2009 01:44 AM

when my truck was stock, highway i was gettin 20+ and now with intake, 4" downpipe exhaust, and the PPE programmer on level one im averaging like 23-24 mpg. Sometimes i think my fuel gauge is screwed up haha. And im drivin 70-75 mph at around 1700 rpm.

BriteWhiteRam 09-07-2009 12:47 PM

im getting anywhere from 19mpg driving nice on the highway, down to 12 foot in it, driving hard, hard accelerating, stock mostly, intake mod, straight piped no tune, if i drove nice, i could easily get 18mpg all the time, but i cant :tttt:

#1 thing for better mileage is speed, keep it to 60-65mph and you will get good mileage no matter what, start going into the 70's and watch your fuel tank empty....

my dodge got 20+ with edge box on 100hp all the time, no matter what i did it would never go below 18...

I love my d-max, but i didnt buy it for fuel economy.... if i was looking for a fuel miser i would have bought a TDI jetta:U:

RODMAN 09-18-2009 06:07 PM

my 2007 classic GMC is stock it gets 12 to 15 in town - 18 to 21 on the road(i have gotten as hi as 24+) towing 10 to 15. it mostly depends on your driving habits. when i had a dodge it got about the same as the duramax

lunk 09-18-2009 07:43 PM

make sure your not going by what the over head computers telling you cause they are way off in some cases especailly after you chip them my said 25mpg so i did it the old tried and true way mileage divided by gallons used and got 17

RODMAN 09-21-2009 07:19 PM

no that is checking at the pump

dmaxman06 10-06-2009 12:42 AM

yeah just keep in mind u cant trust the overhead or dic because your computer still think it had factory tires and wheels and like the dmax is 245 and my dic says on adverage 15 and i can easily get 17 in town AND 20 highway on adverge and like one time my mom:w2: was with me on a roadtrip and i got 24 thats with everything listed below 285 ect :rocking:

Stigo 10-07-2009 09:46 AM

best i have seen my DIC read was 25 on the way to dallas with listed mods.....but that was cruising at 72

gunman45 10-08-2009 08:20 AM

My box stock LLY 5-Speed was getting 18 MPG (calculated) at best……until it hit 20K. Then it was like there was a switch in the odometer. The power seemed to increase as did the fuel mileage. On a trip to Reno traveling 60-80 MPH with the cruise on I averaged 24.7 MPG (calculated).

My 07 Classis LBZ 6-Speed will turn 20K this week and I have done the air box mod and have a CTS on “1”. The dash is reading 22.5 MPG for a freeway average which I do not pay much attention to as the LLY was off 0.3 MPG. I will be traveling to Reno at the end of the month and will calculate my MPG but I expect it to be in the 22-23 range. The 2007 is heavier by 250 + pounds because of some factory options………We shall see.

RODMAN 10-12-2009 03:10 PM

my 07 classic is stock on the hwy i get 17-21 mpg depends on conditions @ 65 to 75 mph and in town is 13-15 mpg.

bubba3m 10-17-2009 06:36 PM

Mine is bone stock with the stock tires and gets 19-21mpg @ 55mph. 13-14 mog in town if I baby it. If you want to break a Dmax in and get good mileage, hook 10000-12000lbs up to it and take it on a 5000 mile ride. They are pretty consistent after that. Don't trust the DIC as it is usually off a couple MPG and is resettable.

edgeman 09-28-2010 02:34 AM

i have a o7 lbz, edge with attitude, k&n intake, 5 inch strait pipe and on level three with a clean filter get about 24 empty and 18 dragging my 38 foot fithwheel

McFadin1stgencummins 10-18-2010 11:01 PM

my friend has i think a 06 duramax 4x4, 4 door and he gets 15 mpg no matter what and his truck is really clean

dozer man 11-18-2010 06:46 PM

I have an '07 classic with an LBZ, and I've tried stock and with a Superchips on economy mode trying to get better fuel mileage, but the best I can do is average around 14.5-15 mpg, that's hand calculated. I run 265/75-16 tires and I drive it like I'm trying to conserve fuel. The worst day of my life is when I sold my '02 Dodge with 24v cummins, 5 sp which averaged 18.5 mpg and was getting better when I sold it. Shame on me.

BriteWhiteRam 11-18-2010 09:56 PM

try a better tuner than superchips...... I now run an EFI tune of 365rwhp and can 18-19mpg mixed town and highway:jump:

dozer man 11-19-2010 08:33 AM

I think I'm just going to sell the darn thing. I've had it to the dealer for warranty a dozen times and it only has 42k miles. I bought my wife an '02 crew cab short bed with the LB7 and it averages 18.5 stock. Get's a about 21 on the hwy at 75 mph.

BriteWhiteRam 11-19-2010 10:43 AM

what were the issues that you had to take it to the dealer for? the 07 classic is probably the most reliable duramax out there, an lb7 will have injector issues unless they have recently be replaced, and thats not a cheap bill:td:

honestly you need to try a better tuner, superchips are GARBAGE! a PPE economy tuner, or diablosport predator are 100% better:c:

i went from 13mpg mixed highway/town driving it like i stole it, to 18mpg with a 65hp tune on EFI, same driving style

dozer man 11-19-2010 05:45 PM

EGR 4 times, then I blocked it. Steering column intermediate shaft, twice, lower steering column bearing, driveline vibration, reshimmed the tranny mount and altered carrier bearing, rear leaf spring bumpers a zillion times, actually every 2000 miles, loose ventilation ducts behind dash, tranny cooler lines, trucks on it's third set of tires, and they're half gone, and we're only at 42000 miles. My father told someone the other day that we buy a chevy once every 20 years to remind ourselve not to buy one.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I forgot to mention that it's been at the dealer all week for an unknown fuel issue. I started it Monday evening and when I pulled it into gear it died instantly. Had it towed to the dealer and their tech thinks it's a part for the filter assembly. They can't tell me what part, or how it works, but as of Friday afternoon, they still didn't have the part. I also have my doubts that their part will fix the problem since when it died it quit like power to the injectors was killed. It never starved for fuel, nor did it throw any codes when it died. What a piece of crap.

BriteWhiteRam 11-21-2010 09:15 PM

you have an air leak in the system, that will happen, possibly the bleed screw ontop of the filter housing cracked, its common to happen

I have had my truck for about 30000k miles and have loved every minute of it, even the parts of it where i had to fix it, the tires will not last, its a 650ft/lb torque monster, no tire lasts on these things

On an update i got 22mpg today, drove about 330miles and i was very pleased, i was in 4x4 1/3 of the trip and still managed that, kept my speed at 60-65mph

dozer man 11-23-2010 09:02 AM

I have babied mine, driving it like it has an egg for an accelerator pedal, tried to squeeze every bit of fuel mileage out of it that I can, best I've ever seen was just under 17 mpg hwy. I'm currently looking for a Dodge in the '03-07 range. My wifes '02 with a tuner on it pumped up an additional 100 lb ft. of torque barely even wears the tires. Nope, I believe I have a Monday truck.

Just kidding dude, both my car and truck are handshakers, and I even do lots of city driving, but I still havent even started to get tired of the ol 5 speed.

BriteWhiteRam 11-25-2010 07:43 PM

i was getting 13mpg with mine how i drive, but now with the tuning, the ppe intake mod, and straight pipe, i get much better mileage, but EFI tuning is to superchips as the TAR21 is to a flint tipped arrow.....:choochoo:

On and edit, you wont be much happier with the 03-07 5.9l mileage as you think, my 05 got very similar mileage as my dmax, and i dont have to ride a lumber wagon now

4x4manonbroke 12-06-2010 11:06 PM

hey, my father in law has a 06 chev with a 6.6 and hes complaining that un loaded he only gets 10-13 loaded and 16-18 unloaded and its dead stock......
he would like to get economy and i was thinking about possibly an inake and an exhaust should help possibly a light tune .........any suggestions would be great

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

what kind of milage do u get with your max now brightwhiteram ?

I could really use a bit of help ...... i think un loaded my father in law
should get at least 20 -24 mpg un loaded he dosent drive like a pozesed demon.....anyways.... i think an intake and an exhaust maybe a light tune..... what do u think ....?

BriteWhiteRam 12-07-2010 02:02 PM

intakes are no good, leave the stock intake alone, they are designed as good as aftermarket, and the powercore filter flows better than 100% of aftermarket filters, and its capable or more efficient and better filtering to boot, these stock intakes are well capable well past 500hp, i run approximately 370rwhp and my intake works awesome
A nice 4" exhaust will help keep egts' lower, and free up all the restrictions in the stock system

My current mileage is 18-22mpg, depending on driving style, thats with stock modified intake, cut out the muffler and cat, and a 365rwhp EFI tune

stock i was getting 13-18, depending on driving style:td:
