How to get better mpg? Lbz DMax

I have an 06 lbz dirtymax stock right now. I plan on doing a 4" turbo back exhaust S&B cold air intake and possibally efi live. Is there anything else I can do for fuel millage?

2004LB7 12-15-2012 07:25 PM

Keep efi live on your list, that will net you the most gain

19psi 12-19-2012 09:41 AM

drive slow and use stock size tires.

1AMatt 12-19-2012 11:31 AM

Intake, tune, and exhaust will help a ton! But also keeping your foot out of it all the time will help the most :tu:

Ha yeah keepin the petal soft is pretty hard when you got that 360 stock horse under you and you have a bunch of powerchokes and cum-a-parts wanting to mess with you lol. But I finally got my truck on the road ( registered and insured ) and I took it on the highway and the odometer said I was getting 21 mpg with a full cab and a quad in the bed :jump: but yet the only thing I did to it was cut the muffler and cat off so my exhaust ends right about under the passengers ass lol but is that O.D mpg reliable?

you might of been close but all DIC are off, next time fill to spill ,drive, then fill to spill.. how you stand the exh under the cab and no muffler?? must sound terrible and LOUD.. I put a muffler delete pipe in and removed after 2 days, sounded horrible and could not hear the radio, hook up the 13k camper and it was worse..

1959JD630 12-31-2012 10:09 AM

It's honestly not that bad I can listen to the radio no problem I can say it's defffenetly not nearly as bad as my brothers straight pipe lb7 with the pipe out the rear lol

that's usually about as good as you're going to get for something that weighs 7000lbs. dont' believe the guys telling you they're getting 25 on the highway.

1AMatt 01-03-2013 05:32 PM

Agreed... 20 Mpg in a 3/4 ton truck is pretty good!

If i drive like a grandpa I might squeese 21-22mpg out of her, but thats it, and I don't drive like a grandpa often

Mines straight piped out the back and it's quite fine inside the cab, I can easily have a normal conversation with my fiance in the passenger seat, or anyone in the back for that matter, on the highway its quite tame, only once I step on the torque pedal does it make noise, and what a noise!:rocking:

Exhaust and EFI-live will help the most. Intake isn't going to do anything. Do the PPE airbox mod, and you are good to 500Hp.

20-22 is pretty good for a truck this big. :)

PPE air box mod

I looked at the PPE airbox mod for the LBZ, I just removed the sheet metal inside the fenderwell blocking the intake (no mention of this on any other sites) and the turbo spooled a little quicker. I did NOT do any cutting (PPE mod) to the air box, why, I found dirt and debris at the bottom of the box that the factory "air spinner" stopped from going directly into the filter including water. Your truck and choice and at 45.00 a filter and water ruining the filter it was an simple decision for me. My truck my choice .........

Wish I could get 15 or 16 mpg out of mine. More like 12 to 13 mpg LOL can't keep my foot out of it.

06SILVERADO 05-10-2013 06:04 AM

Thats unfortunately is the only way to drive them, I kinda drive like I almost stole mine. My Uncle Charlie worked on Cummins/Alllisons (what a perfect match) years ago and always told me never dog/lug a diesel, it'll shorten their life. This is what he told me, 1/2 down on the throttle bring up to speed and let up for cruising. 1500-2200RPM is optimum depending gearing and tires

When in town at 35-40 and under I have my tranny in 3rd gear, 4th is used 45-50 overdrive 5th-6th for the freeway only. I make an effort never to run under about 1500RPM in town. I still average 15 in town and about 18-20 freeway if I cruise.....!!!

I don't own an LBZ but did find this discussion pretty interesting for my LLY application.
Thanks guys...

What is the best oil

2004LB7 11-27-2013 08:29 PM

5w-40 & 15w-40 depending on weather

the duramax is pritty easy on oil. with regular oil changes and non synthetic oil these engines will still go 500K+ miles. the truck will fall apart before the engine requires a rebuild

as for what most seam to recommend based on performance & price is Rotilla, available at walmart: Shell Rotella T 15W40 Motor Oil, 1 Gal - Walmart.com

just follow the owners manual and you will be fine. now if you own an LB7, well no oil will fix them:argh:

It's even harder if you have 892hp with a twin turbo kit under the hood and a custom coal switch and dpf delete.

mine i got 16 city and 21 hwy hand calc..trip from texas to the east coast and back...whatever the hwy speed was ...scott

rvannorman7 05-24-2017 04:40 PM

Tried DuraMiler fuel module on my previous DuraMax and it worked as I picked up 2mpg in city and 4mpg on highway driving the same way I always had done. Many options to change ....it only takes money!
