I have a 2005 duramax that is having coolant come out the overflow and radiator hose is swollen. I have changed the radiator cap and both thermostats. some think EGR cooler is the problem and some think HG. I need help. 84k miles. no warranty

 

If the problem is your EGR cooler, you will most likely end up with either coolant in your Turbo exhuast gas cooler return line, and/or coolant dripping out of your tailpipe. When an EGR cooler goes it leaks coolant in the turbo air intake and you can end up with coolant getting into the combustion chamber and blowing a cylinder or a head gasket. Coolant don't compress! Comparitively, there isnt that much coolant running through the EGR cooler as through the rest of the cooling system. If your blowing coolant back through your coolant bottle I would think either your water pump is not pumping coolant or there is a clog in the flow. I don't know if this is an issue with GM, I know its not with Ford, but my wife's BMW's cooling system will not work properly if there is air in the cooling system. The air has to be purged or the car overheats and blows coolant out the coolant bottle, Have you tested your water pump pressure? I think you have more of a actual coolant circulation issue going on rather than an EGR cooler problem. Don't know if this helps but some things to think about.

 

yes thank you I took it to GM they said HG $1000 IF they get into it in find a different problem less a $1000 I pay 50/50 I think they do not know the problem ??

sounds like a clog some where, or head gasket. i would bet on the head gasket more so than the clog. its very rare that you get anything in your coolant system that will actually clog it. You would probably have to fill your collant resivor 1/2 full of mud to get it to clog anywhere in the system. As for any other componets going bad, there really isnt much to the system. mostly hoses and gaskets.

i am curious though, if you delete your egr, does that mean you can pull the egr cooler. cause to me it sound like a ticking time bomb.

 

I'm going through the same problem now. I thinks its the egr cooler leaking.I have coolant in my erg valve. Im hoping that's what's wrong and not my hg. Im ordering new erg and cooler and retesting. Should know by this weekend.
