Considering This Truck....

This is a picture of the truck I am considering for hauling my trees, etc. The other truck is obviously my current one, I just wanted to test how the "new" one pulled, heance my old one loaded. Anyway, it is an 04.5 LLY truck with the 6-spd Manual((which I like)) , and the only aftermarket mod is a K&N cold air intake similar to the one on the LB7 truck.

Here is my question. Are there any issues that I need to know about ahead of time with the LLY??? As soon as I buy it I will put tunes to it and a South Bend DD cltch like I have in the current truck, but I did notice that the boost tubes are much smaller than in my LB7, by like about an inch!!!
Any and all input will be appreciated.

PS. The truck has 67K and change on it, and I pulled a service record report from the service department, the only MAJOR repairs was a new flywheel at 36,000. But nothing else...

I thought you loved your LB7 ?

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 06:59 PM

I do, I am not trading it, I am just considering getting another to haul with...

I would not trade my LB7 for anything...:U:

it could over heat if you really use the truck

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:27 PM

Well, as soon as I get it it would get pretty mush the same mods that I have on the LB7, before I ever haul with it. But Also some other stuff like the EGR block, etc... and a 5" Turbo Back, etccc
right now it is weak... Compared to Lucille it is SICK!!!
The only thing that would be better is if I can find an LB7 dually similar to it to get, that has not been ragged out...:w2::w2::w2:

I love my dually. Its my first diesel so I cant really compare it to anything else but its the same as the one your looking at.

Have you ever had any problems out of ??? I am planning to haul some pretty heavy loads with it, but I will also upgrade the fire out of it too, before the loads ever start...:pca1:

I love CC duallies. Learning about the LLY I have found that it is only a matter of time until your LLY will overheat while pulling a load. If you follow the advice in the LLY sections of our forum you'll most likely have a trouble free life out it. Adding that extra radiator and fan kit seems to make all the difference in sitting on the shoulder or making it home.

You'll be able to pull more (legally wise) then what you had so it should hopefully, eventually start to pay for itself.

ya i would just do the V2 mod to it so that with heavy loads you won't have to worry about over heating

No problems yet. I do pull a 20ft roll off trailer with about a 4ton payload (give or take) at least 3 times a week and have never had a prob. The truck is bone stock at the moment but i am gathering mods to put on the truck.

You shouldnt have any problems overheating unless you are really workin the truck hard. It sounds like a good truck. Also the LLYs sometimes have injector problems but its really hit and miss and I have only seen the 05's that really seem to have the trouble and even then its rare. Looks like a nice truck, if you have the money I say buy it.

You do need to be aware of the overheat deal, but don't worry about it unless YOU have problems. Yes, I a firm believer that all LLYs will overheat, the deal is, not everyone works their's hard enough with the correct outside conditions to make it happen. That is why we always get the 'all' or 'some' argument, there are a lot of factors involved. Even if your's does overheat or you get real tired of the fan roaring like a SOB all the time, you can fix it with a Rad Mod V2 and truely watch your truck become the tow monster it should of been from the factory. :5:

Other common problems or things to do:

#2 and #7 injector connectors comming loose and causing a misfire (icepicking the connectors is the 'side of the road' fix, updated connectors and brackets is the GM fix).

Delete Cat, block EGR and reroute PCV

Don't worry about a CAI from K&N or any other 'bling' manufacture, the stocker is the best after a simple mod or two is done to it.

:humm: I guess that's it, they are a great engine and hard to beat, I'd own another one in a heartbeat. :5:

Oh, the picture shows you have the power extending mirrors...switch those to the '06 tow mirrors that look like the Fords. They are plug 'n play and the visibility is 100x better than the power extend type. :U:

Ok, great!!! Thanks for all of the comments!!! I am still looking at some other trucks too, but I am leaning heavily toward this one. As far as working it, :w2: yeah, it will get worked, but harder in the winter than any other time, and I plan to put it straight into the shop to do all the mods I can right from the get go. Good to know about the injector issues and the Rad Mod too!!!
K&N? it already has it, and there is no factory box with it, the filter would HAVE to GOOOO!!!
But that is the only Obvious upgrade that I can see.
I am also looking at a Silverado 4500 @ Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet, but I am unsure if I want to go that big. I want to kind of stay under the radar of DOT and the 3500 will do that better.

Anyway, THANKS again for all of the info!!!
