Normal Boost Numbers

It looks like I'm getting right about 23psi under WOT. I would think that is about normal, is it?

jdugie123 07-14-2008 12:32 PM

for stock ya i can hit 32 or 34 my gauge is kinda hard to read at that point because the fence is coming up fast so i am not really looking at it

Normal for a stock dmax, if u really want to play with boost.... 2004.5-2007 Boost Controller for LLY/LBZ [EGBSTCNT] - $329.99 : Pacific Performance Engineering, Innovations in Diesel Performance

u can go up as high as 48....but i wouldn't recommend it at all

jdugie123 07-14-2008 06:17 PM

i think after 32psi the stock turbo is inefficient and they will start to go out

2500HeavyDuty 07-14-2008 06:18 PM

yeah, lbz turbos seem to be stronger for some reason though:humm:

But for efficiency 32 should be your max anything above that ur running on borrowed time and blowing hot air

Well I just wanted to know so I had a base number. Now I'll know if something is off the mark or not. I'm good with what I have now. The exhaust is clean and I have plenty of power. I don't really see the need to add more boost unless you fellars wanna let me in on some kind of a secret.

does lower egts count?

Johnny Cetane 07-15-2008 09:08 AM

Those are always interesting. I'm not having any issues with EGT right now.

My big concern is what the extra boost will do to the motor. Will putting 30 psi to it make it prone to lift a head, damage a rod, etc.

If it won't affect longevity I might do it. Can you get the same effect with a boost stick or do you need that controller?

If you keep stock or near stock programming you'll only get 23-25 psi, which is just fine for everyday travel and some hotroding. If you want the boost to come on faster down low and keep EGTs in check while doing it, go with high flow headers and up pipes like I have on my truck.

on a load dyno, I gained 15hp and 30 lb/ft torque on top and as much as 90 lb/ft torque increase down at the lower RPMs :5: Real world, high weigh and wind drag towing, my EGT's were down about 100* and my ECTs down 5* overall:choochoo: Not to mention, the trans didn't down shift as much and everything just seemed 'easier' when towing.:U:

ya unless you adding more fuel adding boost will only lower your EGTs a little. It is when you start adding fuel when you will see the best results from more boost. You said you exhaust is clean so adding more boost isn't going to burn anymore fuel then what is already burned. I believe the boost valve will add a little but i am not sure that only works for the LB7s that is the only motor that doesn't have a VVG and the only way to increase boost with those is to either buy a controller or use tuning
