Power Steering Leak

My truck recently started leaking power steering fluid, It not leaking from the Pump itself or the steering box. It looks like it leaking from a line that goes to the brake booster.
Is this a common problem?
Is it an easy fix?

Thanks in advance.

DangerousDuramax 02-14-2008 12:09 PM

Yep, thats common on chebby. I've heard that running synthetic transmission fluid will fix it.

Diesel-N-Dust 02-14-2008 12:12 PM

I tried the Lucas treatment, Now it seems it is leaking worse.
I will try the synthetic tranny fluid.

When I get to the point that I need to service my power steering I'm going to swap in some TranSynd.

You will probably have a better chance with the ATF than with the lucas. i went through about 4 bottles of lucas and many power steering bottles and one day had to use ATF and it looked like it stopped, but my leak was in a different spot.

DangerousDuramax 02-14-2008 12:51 PM

Yep, ATF swells polymers. Use synthetic ATF and it will also keep the system well lubed with a reduced friction factor. :up2:

2500HeavyDuty 02-14-2008 12:53 PM

Mobile one full synthetic :)

DangerousDuramax 02-14-2008 01:12 PM

I'll use TranSynd because that's what I run in my tranny's. :up2:

I finally began running Royal Purple Power Steering in my Jeep because the locker in the fton end was causing me all kinds of problems. It works much better with Royal Purple. Not sure that will solve the leak though.

Rttoys 02-14-2008 03:46 PM

It's a pressure line, 'fix it in a can' is not a fix. :ph:Just replace the bad line or both, if you like, one hose is $20 the other is $30. With your truck as high as it is, it will be simple. Just remove the dr. side finder splash shield and you can access everything.

If you want to pin point the leak, start the truck and turn the wheel all the way to one direction (doesn't matter which direction) and hold it to the end. You'll see the leak.:tttt:

Thanks Russell. The back of my mind keeps telling me there is no "snake oil" fix.
Twenty bucks for a hose is cheap.
I thought if I took out the inner fender it would be easy to get to.
You want to work on my truck?

Rttoys 02-14-2008 04:45 PM

We could do it after work one day next week.

DangerousDuramax 02-14-2008 04:48 PM

Using ATF isnt "snake oil". ATF and power steering fluid are identical in base properties. Swelling polymers with fluid is a technology that has been around for many years and we use it extensively in oil/gas wells as well as a lot of o-rings you see are designed to do the same. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting a new hose John. Just wanted you to understand that swelling polymers is not a "fix it in a can" or "snake oil", its a normal chemical and polymer reaction that doesnt hurt anything. It makes my company over $300M a year. :) Anywho, if the hoses are that cheap and easy to change on these newer trucks then by all means get a new hose. :up2:

I understand what you are telling me Tracy, And it makes sense.
I am goint to try the synthetic ATF for a week. If that does not work, Then you and Russel can change out my hose while I drink a cold one!

Cool. Thanks Russell. I'm going to try Tracy's way first and see what happens. Then we (You, myself, and Tracy)can replace the leaky hose.
Any Bets?
Maybe it could be on the casino section!

*Update*

Been using Synthetic ATF for a week now. It is still leaking.
I went to the dealer today and purchased the high pressure line that goes from the power steering pump to the brake booster.
Real busy this weekend, Dont know if I will get to it.

You might want to run your VIN at the dealer. There was a recall for the booster to pump steering lines. I can't remember the specifics or the years. There's a julian date on the hose you need to find.

Or PM me your VIN and I can run it.

Diesel-N-Dust 02-22-2008 01:09 PM

Thanks, I have the line. The dealer did not mention a recall.

2500HeavyDuty 02-23-2008 02:52 AM

so whos going to change it out for ya

Diesel-N-Dust 02-23-2008 08:40 AM

I am going to try to do it today.
