Default Overvboost Condition? help

I just got an 04 2500 with 145000 mi on it. I was on my way home going over a bridge when I punched the gas to pass a car! The ses light came on the truck ran fine all the way to advanced auto parts where they told me it was a turbo overboost condition that made the light come on. I don't have the exact codes or anything for it. What causes this? How expensive is it to fix? Is it something I could do my self? is the truck safe to drive until Thursday when I can get it to the shop and get it fixed? Thanks for the help guys

What is all done to the truck? Any mods? i think its 25 psi it will throw a over boost code. I ran mine at around 32 psi for a few months without head studs without a problem. Can u hear your wastegate open?

To be honest I think that it may have had a chip because of a code that it threw when I had everything checked out before I bought it. As far as after market products it doesn't have any way. I am new to the diesel world so i don't really know what the waste gate is or sounds like when it opens. I do know that the truck is running normal no loss of power and the turbo winds up and the gauges check out on the dash.
How do I find out what psi i have on the boost i am assuming a programmer would help me out? I really appreciate your help. wish i could be more help knowing what everything is and how it runs..

There are a few ways to check boost ether get a pillar guage or a chip with a display screen. It all depends on what u want to do with ur truck. Its not a bad idea to get one in your truck along with a egt guage and a tranny temp guage if your using it for heavy pulling. To make sure things are all staying good. I would suggest a chip because they come with readouts and safety peramiters to protect your truck if something starts getting hot, Along with extra power, better mileage. I would probably say your truck is fine to drive u most likely just over boosted, its just one of those safety measures that is programmed in.

I am not 100% sure but it has a lot of power and throws some black smoke when i get on it so I would assume it might still be programmed I just don't have a way of finding out. I do know it just had 5 injectors replaced in it because the diesel mechanic that I took it to did the work. Whats the possibility it could be the turbo messing up vs. the sensor? how much is it to replace a turbo? Thanks for yalls help guys.

the turbo is fine, it sounds like it is tuned. if the turbo was messed up you would barely make boost, let alone throw an overboost code.

what causes overboost? If my truck is programmed I want to be able to monitor the system and watch work. I never have trusted the dash factory gauges! Could the settings have messed up anything with the boost psi?

Well if ur truck is chipped then its most likely going to be under the hood, where your going to want to look for it. It will most likely be on the driver side of the motor. Just look for something that doesnt look factory. it should say the manufactors name like edge, smarty, diablo, bully dog, exc. If there are none of those then it might have efi live done to it and there should be aswitch in ur cab to adjust your power levels. When u chip a truck it just changes how your motor runs basically it adjusts timing fuel delivery your boost psi. To make it faster and more powerful. Mild tunes are fine for your truck it might just throw a stupid factory code every once in a while when ur gettin on it. It doesnt sound like there is anything crazy done to your truck because it would send ur tranny into limp mode if there was that much of a tune on it. I would get some kind of guages in it though to monitor it.

If he has efi live or any other type of tuner or box it should have some kind of boost fooling built in.
