fuel pressure regulator

I recently bought my first diesel. 2001 chev with duramax. My check engine light comes on then goes off after some mileage then comes back on . I have a code reader and it says pressure regulator 1 performance. Truck has 137xxx miles and chevy replaced the injectors at about 135xxx about 500 miles before I bought it. Previous owner spared no expense and took meticulous care of this truck. I'm no dummy when it come to mechanics. But this is my first diesel. what do I need to do?
Thanks Herb

I recenlty purchaed my 01 with 200K miles on her. I too got a code pO089 which is the fuel pressure regulator. I changed my fuel filter and it's gone. I started to run a qt of 2 stroke oil in my fuel plus diesel clean every tank full for added protection of the fuel system. I've yet to have any more codes. I did end up purchasing a new fuel pressure regulator off of ebay for 175 since the dealer price was 500 bucks for the same part:scare2:

Does your truck have a "lope" at idle(revs up and down)?

Funny you ask, yes it did. I swapped out fuel filters and ended up needing a new WIF sensor, the sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter. Once I changed out the sensor, primed the fuel filter, she ran as good as new with no lope in the idle.

I did get a programer to read the codes and to use if for econo-mode. I did see the code come back one time. I cleared it have yet to see the code. That being said, I purchased a fuel pressure regulator for futre repairs.

Good luck and keep us informed on your resutls;)

Any update on your repairs? My 03 Duramax has been throwing out P0090 code and intermitten crank but no-start. The code has come on ramdomly but the intermitten no-start seems to happen in the morning when it's cold (about 35 dgrees).
Usually when the no-start occurrs, I put my code reader in, clear the P0090 code and it starts.
A few days ago, I replaced the FPR but I've had the P0090 code pop back up and so far have had another no-start. I've read somewhere that possibly the ECM is to blame for the code and hopefully the no-start problem.
I have an appt on Monday to have my computer re-flashed to try to remedy the problem.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

What's the status after the reflash?

johnnydingding 11-25-2011 01:34 PM

Took my truck to a tech for ECM reflash. Tech told me there were no updates available for my truck and reflashing would be a waste of $$ and time.

Made a more in-depth search of the wire harness that runs behind the alternator to the bail connectors. Found a partially damaged wire behind the alternator. The insulation was visually rubbed thin although I couldn't see any exposed strands of wire. Taped it up and placed a piece of rubber under the harness and zipped tied it back down.

Keepin my fingers crossed that this was the root of my problem.

Yes, and sometimes it will lunge from a stop as I step on the gas. I started running chevron and added lucas it seemed to help but still coming off and on.:argh:
