popping noise

my dads truck is making a vibration noise upon acceleration from the drivetrain he said he cant tell where its comming from but there is no vibration in the steering wheel just the sound and an overal vibration in the truck. any ideas? he has replaced almost every part on the front end no in the diff though just steering and suspension. it get worse as he goes faster and less when he slows down. no squeeling just vibration. new tires as well just balanced

Did you happen to check the driveshaft for any unusual play in it and what about the front bearings? Finally can he fell any vibraton at all thru the seat?

sitosterol 02-22-2011 05:58 PM

yeah the drive shaft is still rock solid no movement. the front bearings on the spindle? those are brand new. dont know about the differential where the half shafts come out. the half shafts are brand new as well. yes its mostly in the seat and through out the truck no steering wheel movement but still a vibration in it. when power is applied it gets worse and when he slows down it gets better doesnt feel like its from the motor because it doesnt immidiatly go away when he lets off just when he slows down.

Sounds like rear drive shaft U joints to me. The GFs dads truck had the same problem, I put two new ones in and it drove perfect. Is your shaft a one piece or two piece? If its a two piece then check for play in your carrier bearing.

carrier bearing was replaced 15000 ago. similer feeling but, he can hear it in the front end

i wanna say there's u-joints between the transfer case and the differential on the front... i don't see why you would ever have to replace them, unless you used 4wd all the time... might be worth looking at tho

When my front hubs where going bad, it sounded like metal on metal when I speed up and slow down... You say you've checked or replaced all that tho...

:humm: :humm: :humm:

it sounds for sure like a u joint. did you jack the truck up to check the joint? i would lift the truck up and make sure it wont role any where and put it in neutral so you can spin the tires and really give those u joints a good checking. if you dont find anything there then i would rotate the tires and see if the vibration moves to the back of the truck

X2 on the tires. Not a bad idea to check them.

Any updates on what the noise was?
