fuel pump

a friend of mine has an early model duramax (99 or 00). it isnt getting fuel at the fuel filter so he wants to check the fuel pump. i havent had a chance to check it out so i thought i might ask someone where the fuel pump is. he cant find it so im guessing in-tank. any help is greatly appreciated.

its got to be a 01 thats the first year, and its a lift pump it should be mounted somewhere outside the tank i dont beleive duramaxes are in tank, someone with a duramax might be more helpful then me

The DMax doesnt have a lift pump or pre-engine fuel pump. It uses the CP3 solely to fuel the engine. There are a couple of inherent traits of the DMax when it comes to fuel issues. 7 out of 10 times it can be fixed by just changing the fuel filter. Most people drive on them too long and then the truck starts running bad because it's getting plugged up. Being that it's on a 00 (first year of the DMax) I would suspect that he has gotten some trash at the pick up canister in the tank. It sits right down on the bottom of the tank and has both the pick-up and return there. Tell him to crack the bleed screw on top of the filter housing and see if he can get fuel using the manual hand pump. If not, I would drop the tank and see if there is trash at the canister or if the pick-up tube fell off, deteriorated, or plugged.

Also the seals in the housing or the housing it self can crack, but I haven't head of anyone being able to get it primed in those cases. CP3 do go bad, but I don't know how one would check it a vac gauge?
