What Mods will pay for themselves?

Just purchased a 01 with 171K on the clock. The previous owner told me that the injectors were replaced a while back. Here is Colorado Springs we have to have emissions. It passed but blows white smoke when idleing. The inspector said that it needs injectors. So my question.

Are there any mods that will actually pay for themselves, either in increased miles per gallon or preventative measures? If the injectors need to be replaced again, what can be done to prevent the next set from going bad?

Thank you.

Ok I'm in the same boat if you look at the thread for another Duramax problem you'll see a link to the fuel injector cleaning procedure, I'm gonna try this before I change my injectors as far as mods, it seems that filtration is a must most people are are running to filter set ups a5 micron and a 2micron. It seems cat racor and Donaldson sp? Are the most popular. Also a lift pump seems to be suggested air dog 165 or larger are popular. Seems like changing injectors without changing feed lines is like shooting youself in foot. I'm still researching as im not gonna spend the money to just bandaid it. Some forums I have read about changing return lines. It seems problems lies within injectors not being able to handle dirt air or water. Poor stock filtration, some think thermal transfer is at play so fuel lubricant additives are suggested. Read a study about this also in my thread from yesterday. Some believe problem lies in air gap between injector cup and injector causing injector to become superheated, only logical cure is run more fuel through injector as coolant. Seems wasteful but might lead me to oversize injectors if the cleaning doesnt work.
