Engine just quit

03 3500 duramax dually. 540 miles into a 600 mile trip. Stopped and filled up with fuel. Started right up and left the station. 2 miles further on engine just quits. Coast over to the side of the road and start checking stuff out. No leakage visible so I try priming the truck. It starts and then just dies after a few seconds. It acts like there is no fuel getting to the fuel filter. Finally call triple A and get towed home. This morning go out and put the key in wait for glow plug light to go off and bang starts right up and is still running fine. WTF!!! When it shut off all the gauges indicated normal. I am running Nictane/ Donaldson filters. Primary is 2 micron with water seperator and engine filter is 1 micron. Both are under 1000 miles since last change out. There is no water in the bowl on the primary filter. The engine filter is the Nictane billet unit head with all new gaskets. By the frame approximately under the drivers seat is some kind of pump but I can find no information on it. Anyway HELP. I drive this truck twice a month to Parker Arizona. Long hot stretches of desert with no one around. Now I am having trust issues.
Thanks and sorry for the book

After checking further It starts and runs but doesn't seem quite right. Sometimes it starts right up and sometimes I have to crank for maybe2 or 3 seconds. Help Help

i would replace the short rubber line on the out of the filter housing with a clear on and see if you are getting air in the line.

i would also check with a scan tool the desired fuel pressure and actual pressure
