Unknown Part!!!!

The motor in my 93 3500 CC Dually seized last week. Without the money to fork over for even a junkyard engine, the motor I recently had built for my corvette looked like a fine candidate as a temporary replacement. 350 gasser. I thought it wouldnt be too hard to swap everything, and boy was I wrong!!

The main problem I'm having is that the transmission will not shift out of first. IIRC, I read somewhere that the alternator drives the tachometer, and testing it on my truck, It seemed true. I assumed that the alternator somehow fed signal to the trans computer for the engine RPM signal. But as I was tearing down to remove the engine, I found this part at the very back of the valley between the heads and it has an connector with a lead from the harness plugged into it. If I were to guess, I would say that it is a camshaft position sendor, or something of the nature.

By this description, can anyone tell me what it is? It has two bolts holding it in, round on top.

Also, does anyone have a wiring diagram showing this thing?

Also, does anyone know how to trick the computer into shifting the trans?

Thanks

I might be able to help. Can you post some pictures of it? I could probably identify the part for you.

it has one bolt in it, with a holddown like a distributor. i pulled it out today and it has a gear that meshes with a gear on the camshaft and a hex shaped hole in the bottom that I believe connects with an oil pump drive rod. I don't really think it is a camshaft position sensor but instead I believe that it generates a signal (maybe once per revolution) and that signal feeds to the transmission computer as the engine rpm signal.

Does that sound reasonable?

According to rockauto.com, it is an oil pump drive gear which includes an rpm speed sensor. So I was right. But how do I create a similar signal from the gasser??

I think the engine rpm speed sensor only gives a signal once per revolution. Does anyone know if this true? Thanks

Does anyone know what the engine rpm speed signal is? like how many pulses per revolution? and how many volts? thanks
