94 lift pump question

OK, I checked the voltage at the lift pump connection (with the engine running), getting something like 18 volts, got 16 off one of the batteries, my voltmeter has the battery light on by the way....is this normal voltage? I do have new batteries and alt. The lift pump has not been running....replace????

And...one more question, my local Advance store has the Airtex pump in stock...acceptable??

According to their website, Airtex is an OEM supplier and has been in business 75 years. If no one on here has legitimate issue with them, I'd give them a shot. For all we know, they make most of the pumps and other people just slap a name on it.

I believe I'd put new batteries in my voltmeter and try again. If your voltage regulator is defective, there's no sense subjecting a new fuel pump to excessive voltage; while I wouldn't put much money on it, that might have contributed to pump failure. WIth a new alternator, it's hard to believe that the voltage regulator is bad (most or all GM trucks after... 1972(?) are internally regulated). Surely that would've been tested before leaving the factory/rebuild shop.

Best of luck with your repairs!

Thanks

New battery in voltmeter...now reads 12 something off battery...4 volts less...should equal about 14 at lift pump connection with engine running and with 4 volt error off voltmeter. Going ahead with the lift pump replacement. Thanks. I really like this truck, just got to work the bugs out!:tu:

Lift pump in, opened t-valve a little, fired right up, closed t-valve, fired up again....running great! Can hear the pump a few seconds after shutdown, just like before. I'm a happy guy again. Thanks for all the input I've swiped off this site! Spent around $400 on the truck with the remote PMD and LP, believe it'll be worth it.:c:

Congratulations, I'm glad your truck is once again running well. :tu:

Yeah 18-16volts is overcharging and should only have what alt. is putting out . there will be a little voltage drop due to length of travel through wiring.
