alright.. well, this problem seems to be back.. :/ same as before starts great.. then runs rough stalls, and is a PITA to restart.. I just put a clear line on the return line from the pump.. others suggested i should do that so i can see if it is still full of fuel in the AM..

I tried to presurize the tank, i didnt seem to see any other leaks

one other thing if its normal or not, there seems to be a lot of vacuum on the tank when I remove the fuel cap.. is that normal?

what else should be checked for the start then stall.. I even tried to open the bleeder first and let the lift pump run a while bleeding out fuel before starting..

Have you tried running with the fuel cap lose?

So after noticing the cap vacuum on the tank to the point where I could hear the tank plastic actually expanding and popping back into place after I removed the cap, I changed the return line to clear hose, started and ran the truck for a while. started and ran fine like it always does after the first start of the day.


This morning. 35 degrees, went out to the truck, return line had a small air bubble at the top.. which i read was normal.. ok..

went to start the truck (fuel cap is still off from the day before)

normal single glow plug cycle, and truck fired up perfectly, went straight to a constant idle, no cugging, no loads of smoke, no stalling. Started like the brand new engine that is has should start..

SO, why is there vacuum on the tank, and why does it only effect the truck after sitting for a full night.. and HOW do i add a vent to the tank so that vacuum doesnt occur so it can run this great all the time?

any tips or tricks are appreciated !

SO, why is there vacuum on the tank,
The tank is not venting properly. Could be that it has a fuel cap for a gasser on it. Most of the parts stores only have one part number gas or diesel. I have a few gasser caps on my vehicles. I pull the little flapper off with a pair of pliers. On one, I drilled a 1/8" hole in it.

It may be because after the first start of the day, the truck starts easy enough that it easily overcomes the vaccum.

Or that you have a minimal leak towards the IP and the vacum sucks the fuel back and air in at that point.

As described above. Either get an OEM diesel fuel cap or alter the cap you have so it vents
