push rod trouble

my 97 gmc lost a push rod and we found out it is in the oil pan. weve had people tell us to take off the oil pan and get the rod so it doesnt get in the crank shaft. but then people say to just leave it and put my truck back together becasue the rod is to heavy to get picked up by the crank. Its a lot of work to take the oil pan off so i want more opinions before we leave the rod or take it out. thanks!

Well if was me i go threw the work get out there i wouldn't what to take any chances if some how that rod may it up in the crack and did more damage these just cost much to build or replace

How did the push rod get down there in the first place ?

I'm pulling the pan if its mine. It's cheaper and easier than replacing an engine.

Ya we will pobably take it off.
It got in there cuz the bolt holding on the rocker arm broke in half somehow and so the rockers weren't held on by anything so the push rod went in the oil return and it's in the pan.

Are you sure its in the pan or can you run a magnet down the oil return and pull it out.

GMCgirl95 01-18-2012 07:52 PM

Yeah were pretty sure I mean we don't know for sure cuz we haven't taken the pan off. And ya we tried a magnet and got nothing

If it was me pull the anyways just make sure you didn't do any other damage just play it on the safe side

Ya I think that's what were gonna do. It's jut a pain to lift the motor. But thanks for the advice!!
