9 starters 3 flywheels? why!!
 
my starter on my 1996 k2500 chevy went about 3 years ago mavis tire replaced it with advanced auto new starter . fine. a month later starter went again, it was a new one my regular mechanic replaced it with a new napa. since then i have replaced it 7 more times with new and good oem gm starters and then 2 flywheels until i went to a new mechanic and he said hole in block is not right and starter is always moving and eats teeth off flywheel. he put a block of wood to hold it but i will not drive it now. what can i do? i put in 3rd flywheel and 9th starter. i am sick!!:

Are you running the front bracket on the starter if not you need to

if it the bolt holes out round you can try going up one sizes that mean drill tap and have drill the holes on the starter also


Also make sure the starter bolts being TQ at 40 FT lbs if they not this could be some of the moving going on

Mine did this until I bought a set of ARP bolts. You may need to invest another couple hundred at the salvage yard for another engine.

thanks called them but do not know bolts size till monday., how did this help you? what does it do better than oem bolts?

ARP bolts lot better

One ? i for got ask you did they put new starter bolts in when they put new starter ? You never used old bolts they tren to bend and weaken and break

the first 7 no they kept shimming and ruining it i was told the last guy bought oem chevy bolts but still not great. a piece of wood is holding the starter but thats not good. what does those arm bolts do?

retap the bolt holes to sae thread instead of the metric one size bigger to take the slop out of it there is plenty of meat there to do so

you could helicoil the holes too then you wouldnt have to drill starter oversize. helicoil is a threaded insert to repair damaged threads. theyre strong too if im not mistaken gm helicoils the headbolt holes in the block on the northstar engines when the crappy headgaskets puke

Big block and small block chevs in some cases had a bracket on the end of the starter to combat flexing and stop breakage of the nose cone. You need to check the depth of engagement of the starter pinion gear in the flywheel teeth I believe you should have about an 1/8th inch between the top of the starter pinion gear to the valley of the flywheel teeth when engaged.easiest way is to disconnect batteries and remove the starter solenoid so you can manually engage the gears. If the gear is too far out shims could be added to the outboard side of the starter. If it is too deep shims can be used as normal to move out the starter. In some cases I have had to file the mounting face of the starter to move in the pinion gear could also have it machined.

There been time that had to cut shims in half and just put it one one side of the just get little turn to make mash right and that would out side bolt

not sure if you were asking me about helicoils. if you were you could do it yourself easy/cheap. you drill the holes where the threads oversize, tap them, then thread the inserts in and break a little tab off. you can get a kit at any auto parts place as long as you know what thread/size your bolts are. you might have to buy a tap driver to turn the tap. if you have never tapped anything before i would look for instructions on the internet because you can break the tap in the hole easily. you have to use oil and tap 1/4 to 1/2 a turn at a time. when you turn the half turn or so, you have to turn the tap counter clockwise a bit, (say 3/4 turn) then clockwise again to keep it from jamming/breaking. if it breaks in the hole its a bitch to extract the broken tap
