Smoking at low rpm

Hey guys...

im a newbie to diesels and i just bought a 95 chev with the 6.5 turbo and standard trans.

now it seems to have a hard time starting in the morning now that its getting colder out aswell ass it smokes whitish grey when idling and at low rpm but when im driving it goes away until i stop at a light or something.

iv noticed coolant seems to be disapearing but doesnt seem to be in my oil, could it be head gaskets??? it has a oil leak at the line coming off the bottom of turbo otherwise motor is tight.

can someone give me some idea what im dealing with

cheers

Check your glow plugs ,wires and relay if they test good do a compression test. The coolant could be a bad coolant pump. Coolant will drip out the weep hole in the bottom of the pump, when mine got real bad I could hear coolant come out on the ground when I topped off the coolant reservoir. That's how I found out it was a bad coolant pump. I was fearing a bad head gasket till I found wear the coolant was going.
One more thing about the glow plugs check the clips that hold the wire to the end of the plug if they are loose or corroded replace them. They can cause high resistance do to loose connections or crap on them and make the plugs not work at 100%.
Hope this helps.

ok after a few days of working on it here and there... it turned out the headgaskets were gone. so i put in new ones along with new head bolts and a head set. glow plugs all check out fine, im just awaiting a new waterpump (figured i may aswell change it now)

:argh: hate when that happens.

any clue on how much the job went for?

i did it myself, i was told close to 1500 at a shop

45 bucks for head gaskets
120 for head set
100 for new head bolts
plus new coolant and oil

did it myself over a weekend

You can all ways fix it your self in less time than you would have to work to pay some one else to do it.
