boost gauge
 

Okay so I just installed a boost gauge and it doesnt seem to be working. I know the trubo is building boost. I had a predrilled and tapped hole in the intake tube coming out of the turbo, so i ran the line out of that spot. There doesnt appear to be any leaks in the conections, so my question is what could be wrong?

think what you saying you have it tap up buy the turbo it should be tap on top flat top of the upper intake

Well if you got boost gauge from glowshift check back of the make sure the hole in fitting is open up i have seen plug on no hole in it and the fitting that goes also in intake plug

the gauge is from EQUUS. are you saying the hole that was already tapped in the top of the intake tube by the turbo is not the right hole. I didint put this hole there it is an existing hole in the intake tube.

you don't think get boost in till get in the intake opening it self

in the your first response to my question you said it should be in the top flat of the upper intake.....is that under the cover on the top of the motor? i know this is making me sound dumb by asking this butt i have to. I have built tons and tons of small block chevys and have never heard a reference to the upper intake.

now you won't see boost just sitting there you have take for ride these are not big boost if you see psi from dead stop and just floor it and watch the gauge see what goes to

if i am seeing boost when i am just sitting and it spikes when i floor it what is that saying. and when i relocate the line for the gauge if there isnt already a hole there will i have to take the intake off when i drill and tap a hole?

yes you wil have take off and tap it it only 6 bolts that holes intake 1 bolt the hole the turbo to intake tube and one clamp

if you are just sitting there and spikes it and see gauge move that boost

if you just take off from dead stop and put to floor that gauge should move and when you hit 2000 to 2500 rpms it should be 8psi maybe hit 10psi and now that if have clean air filter and no exhaust leaks

Crazy's right on this one, he told me where to put mine. I took off the upper intake and drilled and tapped it toward the back center on the very top. I used an Equus gauge and when I floor it, it gets up to about 8-10 psi.

Is there a hole in the firewall to route the lines through, or is it easier to drill you own? What did you tap the back lighting into?

i drill new and put rubber grommet in

if back light not LED then you can tap into the dimmer switch

after not finding a good write up i made my own .... here you go

parts needed

---autometer boost gauge ( or other as long as it has the 1/8npt fitting)

---1/8-27 npt pipe thread tap

---5/16 drill bit

---male 1/8npt compression fitting ( i just got the nylon hose kit from sunpro, available at autozone or advance)

you could probably find the fitting without getting the kit but i just got it because it was convenient at the time

this write up may be elementary to some, but im sure some will appreciate it ...

i appologize for the low quality cellphone pics... forgive me (hehe)

First, take off your upper intake manifold, theres 6 bolts on top, 2 sensors to unplug, and the hose and brace to the turbo.

Then decide where your going to have your boost source location, i chose the back right side, put your intake in a vise so its stable to drill, (if you dont have a vise you should go buy one immediately)


be sure you have the intake in the vise so the surface your working with is flat, then drill the 5/16 hole where desired. put the tap in the hole with the tapping tool, make sure its level and with good pressure start turning the tap clockwise in the hole, this is the most crucial part to get right. the tap will begin to cut into the hole, making the threads. once you see the tap get through to the bottom a lil bit youll want to back the tap out and back in a few times to clear the new threads of metal shavings



right here is about where you want to stop so you can make good use of the threads. since pipe threads are tapered you can make the hole a lil too big and the fitting wont fit as snug as youd like.


back out the tap and make sure all metal shavings are cleaned up


now get your male 1/8npt fitting and wrap some teflon tape around it. this will give it a good seal. screw in the fitting and DONT over tighten, cast aluminum is not the strongest metal!

is there any reason why you can't tap it into the tube?

well crazy i drilled and tapped where you said to and it works great. it is only reading like 6 psi is that normal?

well stock motor will only gave you 8 to 10 psi you need to look for exhaust leaks dirty air filter and who gauge are you running

The gauge is from equus. I will check for exhaust leaks and change the filter and hope that helps.
