Default 6.2 blocks with 6.5 heads and turbo.

Ok I've got a friend with a 95 suburban with a mechanical injected 6.5 in it. And yes I'm positive its mechanical previous owner swapped it in where a gasser was. Well long story short he broke the mounting pad off the engine where the starter bolts on by not having the brace on it. I'm looking to help the kid out who is not mechanically inclined at all by using a 6.2 block with 6.5 heads, turbo, and all the accessories from his 6.5. Will this work?

Also which heads should I use Ive heard the valves are bigger on the 6.2 heads and that they flow better than 6.5s? I dont normally play with this small of diesels.

Yes it will work and is fairly common. They call it a 6.2/6.5 hybrid and actually has advantages because the 6.2 has better pistons in them.

The valves are very close to the same size so close its almost impossible to see the difference but the injector angle is different from 6.2 to 6.5 so I would run the 6.5 heads. One thing you might want to conceder is running the 6.5 heads with the 6.2 prechambers. If the kid is not looking to tow anything the 6.2 chamber because of its smaller size will give better fuel economy. With my 6.5's the best I have ever done is 19.5mpg none of the 6.2's I owned ever did under 20. The 83 I have now does 26-28 at around 60mph with no over drive and 4.10's.

One more thing have you though about welding it back on? We have welded a few of them back together because of the same thing. I don't know where you are in Ohio I am in the furthest south west part of Indiana and if you can get pictures of it and post them maybe we can see if it looks do able. The engine would have to be out of the truck and I know it wouldn't be cheep but it would most likely be cheaper than a new engine.

Ok good glad to hear that. I'm sure he will be too. He doesn't tow anything other than like a 2 place snowmobile trailer and sometimes throws a couple kayaks on the roof. Hes looking to get as much fuel economy as possible since hes a 19 year old kid that just had a baby so doing this cheap is also a plus. I'm gonna help him out and do the work for free as long as he supplies the parts. Any idea on how to change the pre chambers out? I don't have a full machine shop but do most of our engine overhauls on Our Cats and Internationals at work but those are sleeved. I have tried to get him to have it welded but no cigar on that, some one preached to him that you cant weld on a engine block because you will weld the bearings all together.... From the pictures he sent me it was doable but some *** hat he took it to jb welded it back on and the piece fell off going down the road

Also I'm way far up in the northwest corner of Ohio 8 miles from Michigan and 8 miles from Indiana

You are a pretty good drive away from me. You can weld on them it just takes a lot of prep work. If you hook the ground cable to the crank you will weld them mains together. The pre chambers are easy to change. With the injector out and the head off you just put a punch down the injector hole and they come right out. They are keyed to the head so putting the new ones in is just the opposite. The only thing you will want to make sure of is they don't stick out past the head surface if they do they will need to be machined shorter.

Well thanks man your a big help on the info on this deal. Hopefully we can find a him a good used block here soon. I knew you could weld blocks used to have to send some of the 5.9 Cummins 58 blocks that were in a few trucks and have them welded. For some reason he just didn't wanna go that way then lost the piece when his starter fell out going down the road after some other shop jb welded it back together. If I run into any other issues I'll ask
Thanks a bunch Dave

Ok I think I found a 6.2 engine complete the guy says the original injection pump went out at 120k sound legit? My question is where will I hook a turbo feed line into and where will the drain go since the 6.2 was never turbo'd I'm guessing it doesn't have these ports

Would 6.5 heads increase fuel efficiency or power, or would it just be the turbo that adds power?

The heads don't really change much its the pre chamber in the head. 6.2's run a smaller pre chamber exit which improves economy. 6.5's run a larger one that improves power but hurts economy.
