6.2 water pump

I am trying to change out the water pump on my 6.2. Does the thin plate that is between the engine and the water pump (it goes all the way to the oil fill nozzle) have to come off with the water pump? I cant seem to get it separated and was wondering if there were any bolts or something on the back side...or do I just need to try harder to get the pump off? Obviously I dont want to break anything.

I cannot believe the design of this thing. It appears that I am preaching to the choir, but I have to vent. You have to practically pull the whole front of the engine off to get the stupid water pump off. Then there are at least three different lengths of bolts that can cause several redos. If that thing ever goes out on the highway, you are stuck for quite a while...assuming that you have your whole toolbox with you. Who designed this thing anyway? Generally I love the engine, but MAN it can be a pain.

And you gotta love the anerobic gasket maker and activator they call out for in the manual. $ for something you will never use any anyware else but I do have 2 installs with the stuff I bought.
