WHAT CAN I DO?????

Ok, here's the deal. I bought this '82 Chevy PU with around 80K on it and a sweet 6.2. Drove it from CA to MI averaging 25.5 MPG. Trouble is the transmission (standard four speed with the forth overdrive) is real hard to shift into 1st and 2nd when it is cold (probably hates Michigan already) and grinds going down from OD. I think I can improve the MPG by changing the rearend to 3.08 (I don't know what I have now but I'll crawl under it tomorrow and see) and changing the transmission to a five speed with OD. The question is; Where do I find out the ratios of the gears in different transmissions and which transmissions will bolt up to this engine?
Thanks, Steve

6.2L if I remember correctly the bolt pattern on the bellhousing is the same as any big block chevy gas engine. I know when I was in the Marines we used the TH400 behind the 6.2L. Gear ratios in the trans I have no clue where you would find these. What part of Michigan are you in.

Yes, the bellhousing is the same as the rest of GM's trannies; you can pull one out of any of the older GM trucks, and it'll work. The 6.2 isn't a powerhouse, either, so you can get away with a gas tranny without any problems. As for gear ratios in the tranny, I'd just do a search on google or yahoo, and see what you come up with....

Here's a chart brought to you by advanced adapters...

The transmission you want would be the NV4500...if you do any pulling/towing, your best bet would be the '93-94 model, as it's got a super low 1st gear ratio...

is the truck a 1/2 ton???? im assuming since you said it had a 4 speed OD tranny, the NV4500 will be your best swap, i want to do it with my suburban....
